BAND OF THE MONTH: WINTERSLEEP
![]() Hello, friends! It seems we’ve got another month on our paws, and you know what that means. Another exciting new band for you to check out! This month, its Wintersleep; an indie rock band from Nova Scotia. Whoever said that Canadian entertainment in junk clearly doesn’t know their indie scene. I discovered Wintersleep when their hit song, “Oblivion” was played on my favourite radio station. It was one of those horrible moments when you realize that you love the song being played, and become suddenly aware that you did not listen to the name of the song before it started playing. Well, we’re not going to get into the enormity of my search for this band. It was just too complicated. Either way, Ive been completely in love with this band for years. Wintersleep has this sound that is quite similar to slower Manchester Orchestra songs, except the lyrics are softer and a little less obvious in ways of meaning. My favourite Wintersleep song, “Orca” is a very powerful song that has haunted me for a few years, now. It’s a mixture of powerful distortion and simple acoustics. The song makes a lot of reference to growing stronger, but in a darker way. It is powerful and inspiring; everyone I introduce to it seems to love it almost as passionately as I do. Some other good tracks from these guys are “A Long Flight”, “Butterfly” and “Listen (Listen, Listen)”. All three tracks are slow, smooth acoustics littered with poetic lyrics and mind-capturing melodies. Wintersleep is hard not to love if you’re into bands similar to Bright Eyes, Manchester Orchestra, or The XX. Their smooth sound is a great addition to any indie playlist. I think that the only downside to this band is that they aren’t very well known, despite their incredible talent. They deserve to be spread. So, even if you check these boys out and aren’t a fan, please suggest them to any of your friends who might be interested. I find that they generally have something appealing for everyone. If I could force you to listen to one particular Wintersleep album, I would say that you should check out “Untitled”. It came out in 2005 and was WIntersleeps second full-length ablum. It features two hidden tracks , “Spring” and “Damage”. “Spring”, in fact, can be found by rewinding the first track on the cd, as it is found in the pregap of “Lipstick”. See? Creative. As always, I cant really make you listen to this band, but you really should. Especially Orca. As always, we’ve got links at the bottom of the page. Happy reading! ![]() I have had a few Wintersleep songs kicking around my iPod for a while, but I really didn't listen to them often, unless they came up on shuffle. It wasn't until Linzy and I were chatting one day and she send me a link to listen to Wintersleep's song Orca that I really and truly fell in love with this band! After that, I purchased the album "Welcome to the Night Sky" and fell madly madly in love with it. My absolute favorites include Orca, Drunk On Aluminium, Weighty Ghost and New Inheritors. They have the mellow sound that I'm totally looking for after a long day of work, and the band sort of sounds like a folkier sounding We Were Promised Jetpacks... I would recommend Wintersleep to people who are fans of bands like The Hold Steady, The Low Anthem, White Rabbits or The Weakerthans. But you know the drill by now, don't take my word for it, go and listen to Wintersleep yourself, and see what you think! The links are below like always! ![]() I remember Linzi telling me about Wintersleep a little while ago, specifically about a song called "Orca", which I did find and download, and was really into. I'm on their MySpace now, and I must say, after only hearing Orca, what I'm hearing now is COMPLETELY different. From what I've heard of them prior to today, I had them as a darker, more low key type of band, but if you head to their MySpace and check them out, you won't hear what I did initially. The sound is very upbeat and I've had it on for a few minutes while trying to sort some things out in my apartment, and it's making the morning more enjoyable. This is a "get up and do something" kind of sound, in my opinion. I would definitely like to check these guys out more, and see them live. Their music definitely has a vibe to it that makes me want to see them live and dance. Go check out their MySpace and tell me you don't end up nodding your head while you're listening to them, and humming the tune a couple of minutes after listening to their songs for the first time! ![]() ![]() ![]() New month, new band! And with December comes the aptly named Wintersleep. Now, I hadn't heard of Wintersleep before Linzy made them this month's band, but since then, I have listened to them non-stop. This Nova Scotia based band has a wonderful sound that I enjoy listening to after a long day of Christmas Decoration Walks (tis the season...) when I sit around with an adult beverage (for those of you not of legal drinking age, a great mocktail is sprite and cranberry juice, but I digress). Their mellow, yet upbeat, tunes are a perfect compliment to unwinding after spending my day explaining the same things over and over again. Favorite songs include "Drunk on Aluminium," "Archaeologists," and "Weighty Ghost." So, to sum up, Wintersleep=amazing music to unwind to, especially if you enjoy some mellower stuff, like The Hold Steady. Even if you don't, you should definitely give Wintersleep a chance. Because the only way you can definitively say you don't like something is to try it, right? LINKS
