What's Religion Got To Do With It?
![]() Okay, I have to say something here because honestly? I am sick and tired of listening to people trying to justify why people in our society who are attracted to the same sex can't have the same rights that a straight person can. When did we start to become defined by who we loved? Should it just matter that we do love? I mean today love is something strong and validated, which without we wouldn't be able to live (I know I know, we need food and air too). I know for myself without the love I have in my life, I wouldn't be the person I am. I don't believe that God (or whomever you believe in) passes judgement on people for loving. I was raised in a house where, religion was a part of it, but it was NEVER forced down my throat, I was allowed to be open and find my own way, which is what I believe has made me into the open woman I am today. I don't judge someone passed on their skin color or their sexual preference. I respect each and everyones right to be whomever they want to be. Being alive is not a sin and no one has the right to be condemned because of any belief they have. This isn't something that should honestly be even an issue. Laws and rules get changed EVERYDAY to placate the people in power and to give them the ability to do whatever they want whenever they want, why can't the rules change to give everyone in society the same rights? My best friend is gay, and I don't think I would want him any other way. He is amazing and kind, works hard and hardly ever complains. I know he had a rough time in high school, I know that most times society isn't fair to him, but you know what? He still keeps his head high and keeps going. I believe that he should have the right to marry and if he wants to adopt children in the future. Why not? Why can't he get those rights but it is okay for a single mother to have eight children through IVP? I see the struggle gay/lesbian/transgender couples have all the time in trying to start their own family. There are numerous children out there, struggling to survive because they need a home and a family who will love them, but yet these same-sex couples are turned down EVERYDAY because of whom they love. All children need love, does it really matter if it's a Mom/Dad, Mom/Mom or Dad/Dad? Love is love in my opinion. Just recently, our very own Caity was involved in defending gay rights and she suffered for it. She was in a Starbucks, working on some writing, when she overheard a guy talking about these two guys, who were obviously a couple. Caity being the amazing woman she is, went up to this guy and asked him what the heck he thought he was doing. This of course led to a fight, wherein the guy sucker punched her in the jaw and then ran off. Caity of course was kicked out of Starbucks and told never to return because you know she started a fight. Honestly, why did that even need to happen? Why do people insist on making the life of two other human beings so miserable? Is it because they are scared? Is it because they worry that they might be converted? I'm sorry to tell you, but these people are born just like you and me, and they don't choose to be gay/lesbian, it is who they are. Also, they are NOT going to try and 'convert' you or change your life. They just want to go about their life like everyone else. Next time you have coffee would you like someone sitting behind you and ragging on you for your life? Didn't think you would. Then there are moments like this that really break my heart into a million pieces. Don't people see the affect their words have on young minds? Can't they see what they are doing? This is the second child in the matter of a couple weeks who have killed themselves because of taunting and teasing. It makes me wonder about our society. Then you have the people trying to quash gay rights and all they quote is the bible. I would love to see them defend their stance without using the bible as a backboard. I've included these two videos that are floating around the internet, the first one is from the Nation For Marriage, I personally detest this video but figured it needed to be shared: This second video is a parody for the one above, which features Alicia Silverstone and Lance Bass to name a few: This third video is made by real people, whose rights are being affected.
