Caity vs. The Weekend Kids
I'm back with another MySpace cruise result for you! This time around it's The Weekend Kids, from Edmonton, Canada! As always, I was crawling MySpace and found them, this time around, however, I had actually HEARD of The Weekend Kids, one of my friends in Chicago had been super into them, and I had always forgotten to check out their MySpace, so when it came up, I was more than stoked to finally hear their music that my friend raved about! I was NOT let down, in fact I think my friend is crazy for not sitting me down and forcing me to go to the MySpace page, true story. As always (again) when I find a rad MySpace band, I have to hook my homeboys and homegirls up, so I pestered the band and scored an interview with them so you can learn a little bit more! “Biggest moments for us happen all the time! every time we play an awesome show, or write a new song.” For our readers who don't know who you are, could you please introduce yourself and what you do for the band? I'm Pete, I play lead guitar for The Weekend Kids. How did The Weekend Kids come to be, and where did the name come from? The Weekend Kids is pretty much the outcome of 4 years of writing, playing shows, and growing as PerfectBlue. Our street team was called The Weekend Kids, named after a song we wrote called Emotherapy which was a fun poke at the 'scene' but we really liked it and it came on to being our name. Your new demo "Go To Let Yourself" has appeared on MySpace, and you've said that it was completely DIY which is quite impressive! How did the recording process go? Hah, that was a working title, i think we wanted to call it Let Yourself Go, and it was written down like that and we haven't taken the effort to fix it! But yes, its all DIY! we spent the last few years writing and recording our recent EP, and we spent a ton of money and time in a studio with a producer and a whole team. It was a great learning experience but we didn't have a chance to capture the way we sound live. I think a lot was compromised to make something big, but for this upcoming record we want it to be as raw and live as possible, and for us to apply our knowledge and make something we love. Right now we are just demoing, and writing at the same time, we plan to rent some more gear and fully record the final record in our basement at the end of the year. You're based out of Edmonton, Alberta. How is the local scene there? Did you find it particularly hard to crack into? The Edmonton music scene is pretty big, there is always something going on but the punk scene itself is lacking in players. We've noticed a lot of band's breaking up or moving out of the scene lately. But there are always places to play, and new bands coming out (especially in small towns around Edmonton). It's slowly building up again, and we're lucky to be a little more experienced and ahead in the game right now. What inspires your lyrics? Is there one specific lyric that means the most to you? Right now our biggest inspirations is just living, about what we do on a daily basis. We're really going back to our punk roots and being really specific and personable with what we write, instead of being overly general...There's a lot of inside jokes in our lyrics! if i explain them, they won't be so much fun would they? What kind of message are you trying to get out with the band? We want to just be a band, play music, and have fun, and we want everyone to come out to shows and have fun with us! For those readers who haven't seen you play live, can you describe your live show? What gets the best reaction from the crowd? Our live shows are pretty chaotic, we like to have a good time, there's always a lot of laughing, and falling down, but we try to keep our music as tight as possible! I think the crowd likes our energy, and likes seeing us have fun, we try not to take ourselves too seriously, we take it more like a night out than a job. What has been the biggest moment for the band? What has been the biggest challenge? Biggest moments for us happen all the time! every time we play an awesome show, or write a new song. We try to keep our goals where we can see them! but we did get a chance to play on City TV breakfast television, that was a new experience! we've never played live TV before, it was weird and fun playing in front of a camera. The biggest challenge for us, and i think most bands, is getting the name and music out there. We're finally at a place where we feel like we can push this, so with this full length release, we're going hard to take it to the next level. For the kids out there with bands of their own who are trying to crack into the industry, do you have any advice or words for them? Write good songs, have fun, and play tons and tons of shows!! The music industry is a rough one to be in, What fuels your passion to keep going? We are a tight band, we are close friends and family, so we look forward to writing and playing with each other, and it helps us enjoy every minute of it wether it amounts up to anything or not, it means a lot to us to be able to do it. So what can The Weekend Kids fans look forward to in the future? Well, the plan goes like this: write and record a full length album, tour tour tour!!! so look forward to some awesome music, and good times. Here at the Sound Faction we are five of the most random people you will ever meet, so we like to end our interviews on a less serious note with five random questions. Are you up for that? bring it. If you could pass a law for the world, what would it be? Statutory holidays every friday. Which is worse, cheeto fingers or juice mustaches? Cheeto fingers, juice mustaches are easily remedied with a swipe of the shirt sleeve. What girls fashion trend confuses you most? Pants... Who would you want to win a date with? Oprah Who smells the worst in the band, and how often to you feel the need to spray them down with Febreze? I think we all smell relatively clean-ish.
