BAND OF THE MONTH: WARSHIP
![]() Well well well, December certainly crept up on us here at The Sound Faction, but we have a damn good band to share with you guys this month; Warship! Now, as you'll see in Jen and Natty's write ups, we all found out about Warship when we all went to Buffalo to catch LeATHERMOUTH. Well, we were certainly blown away by the band and definitely knew we wanted them for our Band Of The Month one of these months. The band is still fairly new, having formed only this year, but with Francis Mark and Rob Lauritsen from From Autumn To Ashes forming the band, it makes sense that the band is so mind-blowingly good despite not even being a year old. There's a rawness to the music that is hard to come by these days. An angry, brutal honest sound that, personally at least, I can only get sometimes from a mix of screams and worn down vocal chords, and, this may only make sense to the people who know me, but it's definitely beautiful in an ugly way. Warship is a band that if nothing, is cathartic. On their MySpace, Francis says, “I don’t think a lot of people were expecting this. When I said I was starting a new band, people thought I was going to go in a more mellow direction,” says Mark. “It’s definitely a lot more blown-out, and raw, and with more driving rhythms and ugliness than we ever did with FATA.”
Personally, I think that's the best description of the band. Really, you need to check them out to know 100% what they're like, and I think this will be a band that you will go one of two ways on. You'll love them, or you'll hate them (or possibly only love them if you're in a certain mood). Personally, I think they're fantastic. The bands first album, "Supply and Depend" dropped on November first, and you can hear samples of it on their MySpace. I'm not going to tell you to run out and buy the album right now, but I am going to tell you to give these guys a listen. I think this is the kind of band that's going to have some really, really dedicated fans, and I know if you're going to be one of them, no one will need to tell you to get the album. You'll do it on your own. ![]() I have to admit that Warship isn't the type of music that I generally listen to. In fact, I had never even heard of the band before it was decided that they were our Band of the Month for December! Of course the first place I hit up was their myspace page and "Where's Your Leash" started to play. Now it just so happened, that I was in a pretty crappy mood in that moment in time, and I was in the mood for a heavy pounding song, so it worked out just fine for me! I would listen to Warship again, for sure. I'd say that the terms would have to be right for it to happen, I'm not so sure I'd set my iPod to play it while I was driving or anything (I get road rage pretty easy...), but I would definitely listen to it and pound something in my bedroom, or slam around a mosh pit to it, for sure! Warship... do it. You know why... ![]() Oh Warship! I have nothing but wonderful feelings for this band. Honestly! I first heard about Warship when some SF members and friends crossed the boarder to see another band in early September. First thought: My gosh these guys are friggin good!! Second: My gosh look at him (Rob) play!! I honestly could not take my eyes off of Rob playing guitar. It was utterly insane… the best way of course!! We had the pleasure of meeting Rob and Francis after their set and they were awesome. And awesome enough to get pictures with us! Visiting their Myspace is a wonderful idea. Picking up the album is an even better one. My pick for favorite Warship song: “We’ve never been equal.” With “Where’s Your Leash,” a close second. Listen, enjoy, rock out, smash some things…but nothing valuable. You don’t wanna be sad about it later! ![]() You know, a lot of our bands of the month are ones that hold a special interest for one of us. This band was one that some of us here at the Sound Faction just happened to stumble upon when we went to Buffalo to see LeATHERMOUTH a while back. We weren't sure what to expect really, but boy were we blown away by what we did see from this band. Warship were amazing. Thats all I have to say really. You now how sometimes you just stumble upon a band that just clicks with you? Well they did that for me. They hail from Brooklyn and are a band that are going to make a dent in your playlist. Their music is forceful and will make you stand up and listen. I suggest that you go to their myspace and check out what they have to offer. My personal favorite would have to be 'Wounded Paw'. I honestly have spent a couple nights with their myspace just playing on my computer as I have worked on a few things or just wanted to listen to some music. I think that everyone out there should make an effort to go out and pick up their album. And if you didn't know, it came out on November 4 of this year. DO IT! PLEASE? (see I even asked nicely this time instead of demanding). ![]() As I said when we did Devil Wears Prada for BoTM, I am usually not a metal fan. Usually the genre gives me migraines. But, Warship is proving to be an exception, just like Devil Wears Prada. The lead singer has an ability to make his screaming melodic, as if he was singing the lyrics, just really really loudly. The songs up on their myspace exemplify their diverse style within metal, especially the songs "fetus flytrap" and "wounded paw." These two show that the singer can do more than just scream into a microphone. So, if you love Silverstein and The Devil Wears Prada, check out the Brooklyn based Warship. Even if you don't like metal, you should check them out. Why? Because everyone should expand their music palette. And, of course, because we said so. LINKS
