Manda vs. Veil Veil Vanish

I came across Veil Veil Vanish when one of our super awesome reps mentioned them in an email for another interview we were trying to work out. I have to be honest, I thought the name was pretty sweet, so I popped over to their MySpace to check them out, and really liked them. So, of course, I did my best to set up an interview. Well, it worked, haha! Go check out Veil Veil Vanish!

"We definitely put a lot more work in terms of time and energy into the album." - Veil Veil Vanish

How did the band get together?

Keven Tecon (vocals and guitar), Cameron Ray (guitar), Amy Rosenoff (bass), Robert Marzio (drums) and Justin Anastasi (keys). The band started in early 2006. We knew each other from other bands that were all musically different but each has a similar aesthetic that we thought could be put together to form something entirely new and different. Cameron and I created the original demos then Robert and Amy came in to complete the band. Justin had been doing our artwork and flyers for a long time and we thought he would be a great fit to join for the new album on keyboards.

Describe Veil Veil Vanish in one sentence.

Loud.

You've recently released your first full length album, Change in the Neon Light, how does it feel releasing a full length in comparison to EPs? Do you feel there's any more pressure?

We definitely put a lot more work in terms of time and energy into the album. You have a lot more room for error in an EP which is exciting in a way but for the album we wanted to make a cohesive piece of music that had several dimensions to it. We also recorded the album in Los Angeles with producer ATOM who has previously worked with bands such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Cribs, and Maximo Park as an engineer. Recording with album with Atom was an entirely new experience than recording the EP with one of our friends

How have your fans responded to the album so far?

People have been really liking the album which is great to hear. This album is a big departure from our EP so it's nice that people are coming along with us. Even critics have been giving the album great reviews which never hurts.

I can imagine, yeah! So you mentioned reviews, and on your site, you have a fan reviews section, and prior to the albums release, everything everyone was saying was very anticipatory and everyone seemed really excited and supportive. So I have to ask, what is your relationship with your fans like, and what is it like to experience an album release with them?

Our fans are extremely important to us. If we did not have them, we would not be able to do this. So we have to thank them for just about everything because... them supporting us is allowing us to do this, and this is what we want to be doing, and as long as they continue to support us, we're going to do our best to please them. So yeah, It's great. We try to make sure we show it when we can and just... you know, like I said, the fact that that many people went out and apparently bought the record that first week is great. It's not something that many people do anymore, so we're very thankful for that.

What's your favourite song on the album, and are there any that you wish you could go back and tweak a bit more?

We of course love all the songs on the album but I think that 'Modern Lust' really stands out as unique and different from our other songs as well as being a great dance song. I don't think we would actually want to make changes to any of the songs. I like the idea of moving forward and writing new songs instead reworking old ones into the ground.

What was the recording process like for you, and what do you think the album says about you?

It was an intense, emotional process that ended up being an amazing experience. We gave up the rest of our lives for a few months while making it so this album really was our entire world for a while.

You hail from San Francisco, so for those of us who aren't from there, can you describe what the scene is like, and how you think it may have shaped or influenced your music?

San Francisco actually has a really diverse music scene. I think that as far as San Francisco goes, we were more shaped by some of it's nonmusical influences such as its unique history, architecture, and weather which are all both romantic and dark.

What has been the best moment for the band so far?

We recently played our first official album release show at Popscene here in San Francisco. It was a really amazing night with lots of support from our friends and fans. We always like to think that the best is yet to come though. We can never agree if we are pessimists or optimists.

What does the future have in store for the band?

We are planning to do a west coast tour over the next month and then tour the east coast in May. From there we will be doing a nationwide tour in the summer and hope to try and make it to Europe sometime this year. We're also planning to start writing for our next release.

We like to end all of our interviews with five random questions, so hopefully you're up for that! If you could have lunch with any fictional character, who would it be and why?

Satan. I hear he's a real charmer.

Who would you want to win a date with?

A pegasus. You wouldn't need to do much talking and would get a free ride home.

If you could only eat one type of food for the next three years, which food would you choose and why?

Anything in the form of a sandwich because they make my tummy smile.

If you had to be an inanimate object, what would you be?

A sandwich eating a sandwich.

If you had to be stuck in an 80's movie, which one would it be and why?

Twin Peaks. We already know who killed Laura Palmer and could speed things up. Maybe that was 90's though?

[Editor's Note: Twin Peaks was indeed 1990, but that's all right, we accept the answer while we struggle for our walkers so we can go stand on the porch and yell at the hooligans who walk on our lawns.]

And last but not least, this is your shameless self promotion spot. If there's anything you'd like to add, this is the place to do it.

Our album is available at stores and on iTunes. We're also going to be selling new t-shirts, stickers and buttons on our website! MySpace and FaceBook

Thanks so much to Veil Veil Vanish for chatting with us! Check out their MySpace to hear songs and learn more about the band!
