Caity vs. The Outside Looking In

Here I go again with my random finds on MySpace, but come on, have I let you down before? Have I given you a reason to not trust me? Didn't think so! This time around we have The Outside Looking In, a band from London, Ontario who rocked my speakers off with a fun dancey sound and great riffs to rock out to!

“As a band we like to promote a positive atmosphere, to brighten up someones day, any little thing that is away from negative feelings.”
The Outside Looking In

For our readers who don’t know who you are, could you please introduce yourself and what you do for the band?

Hey everybody, We're The Outside Looking In. We are based out of London Ontario, Canada. We are Matt Veenstra, Chris Walters, Tom Harvery, Mike Klassen, and Matt St. Pierre (Slam)

How did The Outside Looking In come to be, and where did the name come from?

One day Matt and Tom just started to write a song in toms basement under the band name "The Outside Looking In." When they realized that they could potentially have something good going they decided to call in the members of old bands that we had. So Chris, Slam, Tom and Matt all started jamming. When we realized that in orderd to go anywhere, and to perform better we would need a lead guitarist so we called up mike who moved away from our town in grade 9. Thats when we became "The Outside Looking In." We've tried to change out name before, but The Outside Looking In (TOLI), just seems to suit us the best.

What's your favourite thing about your fans? Any fun stories?

Its crazy to think that one minuite you're walking down the street and girls roll their eyes at you, and then later on in the day they see you playing your show, and they think you're totally sweet. The fans make us feel loved. No real good stories though.

What has been the biggest moment for the band? What has been the biggest challenge?

Since we started Chris always said to Matt, "I want to play with SYDNEY (Chris's Favorite band), if there is one thing i want from this band it is to share the stage with them." The day we made that dream come true was a big moment for us, it made us feel like we could do anything we wanted, and now we're continuing to grow and move on to bigger things.

The biggest challenge is probably staying sober enough to play. Drinking age is 19 in Canada, and one of our favorite games is called "Drink the Beer." It's hard to be able to resist the temptation and actually play our set to make us sound the best we can.

According to your purevolume page Your EP "Tragedy" was released in September, how was the recording process?

Well we're actually friends with our producer Bryan Vanrooyen, so it was a really fun process, believe it or not we went in the studio and did the whole thing in probably less then 8 hours. We all had a blast, it was a new experience and We've never seen so many buttons in our lfe.

What inspires your lyric? Is there one specific lyrics that means the most to you?

Everything. Theres not a point in a day where you can't imagine a setting or story line. Alot of the lyrics are based on actual events that have happened to either myself or someone I know that everyone can relate to, which is probably why alot of the fans truely appreciate the lyrical content of our songs..

What kind of message are you trying to get out with the band?

The message is mixed through out all the songs we have written. But as a band we like to promote a positive atmosphere, to brighten up someones day, any little thing that is away from negative feelings.

For those readers who haven't seen you play live, can you describe your live show? What gets the best reaction from the crowd?

When we play live I think we can make everyone in the audience feel like we're best friends with them. We go up there, we talk to the croud, we try our hardest to get them to be involved with us, and we all get really into the music. Probably our favorite part of the whole set is the breakdown in the song "Fine." We try to get everyone to clap along with us and it's always nice to see everyone with their hands in the air, right into our music.

What can we expect to see from you in the future?

You can expect to see us hopefully on tour, putting out a new album, and trying our best to get our voices heard.

Here at the Sound Faction we are five of the most random people you will ever meet, so we like to end our interviews on a less serious note with five random questions. Are you up for that?

Gotta fight fire with fire.

What was your favorite Halloween costume as a kid?

One year Chris and Tom went out completly dressed in black and just messed with everyone. We were climbing on peoples cars, and Chris tried to get in one, but the man in the drivers seat was having none of it.

Who would you want to win a date with?

Marge Simpson

If you could pass a law for the world, what would it be?

No such thing as 19+ shows.

If you could have lunch with any fictional character who would it be and why?

Peter Griffin, cause he's hallarious. or Led Zepplin

What girls fashion trend confuses you the most?

Tampons.

And here's your shameless self-promo spot: anything you'd like to add about yourselves, the music, or anything else?

We just hope that you like our music. You can check us out on the web at www. myspace. com/theoutsidelookingin and look forward to new music in the future, and album, and The Outside Looking In in YOUR town! take care everyone!
