BAND OF THE MONTH: THEORY OF A DEADMAN

This month's Band of the Month is one that has split our ranks in two with the Americans on one side, and Canadians on the other... I anticipated this split when I chose this month's featured band, Theory of a Deadman. Perhaps the split comes from Doctah J and my lack of prolonged and excruciating exposure to the band, where as the Canadians among us are bombarded day in and day out with it, who knows! What I do know is that while we all agree on many things, we also differ on many, and this is one where we differ greatly. I like that about us!

Something strange happened between the years of 2001 and 2011. Okay, a lot of strange things happened, but one thing particularly pertains to January's Band of the Month. Between 2001 and 2011... Theory of a Deadman, started not sucking.

Now I don't know what happened within the inner workings of the band, or what spawned the style change, but thank god, amirite? The last thing we needed was another Nickleback clone, which is what we had been dealing with until very recently! But in 2011, Theory of a Deadman put out the record "The Truth Is..." and it took me a long time to give it a listen, because of the fact that I thought that the band was terrible. When I did listen to it, however, I was shocked to hear this southern-rock inspired power album that had me rocking out, laughing, and singing along at top volume!

Theory of a Deadman is from Vancouver, Canada. They were the first act that signed with Nickleback frontman Chad Kroeger's record label 604 Records in 2001. The trio has been pumping out records and touring ever since. At first the band sounded extremely similar to Nickleback (disturbingly so), but their recent effort "The Truth Is..." breaks free of that curse, and thrusts Theory of a Deadman into their own spotlight.

Normally these Band of the Month types we put up are bands who we have liked for a long time, or whose discology is awesome! But this is not the case this month. In the spirit of January and new starts, I am giving Theory of a Deadman a new chance to impress me in the coming years. Do yourself a favor and give "The Truth Is..." a listen, even if you dislike the rest of their stuff. My personal faves from the record are "The Truth Is... (I Lied About Everything"), Bitch Came Back, Out Of My Head, and Gentleman.

As always, links are below!

Oooh... Theory of a Dead Man... Well, I have to say that in order to be fair, I did check them out again. However, I found that I continue to dislike them just as much as I did last year. Its not that they are a terrible band, its just that their sound feels all too farmiliar to Nickelback. I cant stand Nickleback. I guess that their sound is just a little too "Ive-Already-Heard-This-Somewhere" for my personal tastes. Again, its just my opinon. Maybe you like that particular style of music.

I dont like being the bad guy, but I just dont care for this band. Still, you should check them out. The Band of the Month section is not about us telling you what you should or should not listen to. This is where we voice on our opinions on bands that we believe are worth giving a shot. So please (whether I like them or not...) do just that. Happy New Year, all!

I'm sorry, I don't really have much to say on the topic of Theory of a Deadman... I've tried listening to them, and never once have I come across a song I like. They can be catchy, and they have some good guitar, I'll give them that, but lyrically as vocally they just don't do anything for me. I definitely agree with Linzy on the "I've-heard-this-already" front... And I've pretty much heard it from Nickleback. If you dig that sound though, check them out! They just don't do anything for me.

Oh no...okay I am going to be 100% honest with this one. I...can't stand Theory of A Deadman. I remember when they first came out and they were awesome because you'd never really heard many bands on the radio like them. But I am pretty well over it. Where I work, the station that is on plays 5 certain bands, way too often. And I mean, you can hear a song by each 5 bands, once an hour. So basically your eight hour shift is just filled to the top with Nickelback, Creed, Barenaked Ladies, default, and Theory of A Deadman. And aside from Barenaked Ladies, all of these bands sound the same!!

I'm sorry, I can't do it. At all. In the slightest. I find their songs all sound the same, and his voice just does nothing for me.

That's just my opinion though. As always, we encourage everyone to always check a band out for themselves!

January is considered to be the month of new beginnings, so it makes sense that our band this month would be one that deserves a second chance. It is with that spirit, that I listened to this month's band, Theory of a Deadman.

When Caity revealed this month's band, I was a bit confused. Wasn't this the same band that sounded like a Nickelback clone? But, I decided to give their new album, The Truth Is..., an unbiased listen. What I heard pleasantly surprised me. The first track, "Lowlife," was a toe tapping southern rock inspired track that had me tapping my toes and bopping along, even before my coffee. It just got better from there, with "The Bitch Came Back," and "The Truth is...(I Lied About Everything).

Since this Theory of a Deadman was such a far departure from the one I heard years ago, I had to turn to spotify to see if they were the same band. Not only were they same band, but the first album was exactly what I thought it was, a Nickelback clone.

So, I would say, give Theory of a Deadman a chance, even if you have already gave them a listen years ago and decided that they were not your thing. After all, it is the month of second chances.
