"Them" (AKA: "lls")
![]() Before I say anything, this isn't to be confused with the 1954 film 'Them!' with the giant, radioactive ants... I am a horror movie whore! I will readily and enthusiastically admit it, and it's gotten to the point where I know the basic plot and outline of a horror film (quite specifically, teen slasher slicks). Like the slutty, half naked girl, or the kids having sex will be the first to die, at some point, they'll split up when they really shouldn't, and either the virginal kids or the sweet, feminine heroine will be the one(s) to survive. So to say it takes a lot to creep me out on the big screen wouldn't be a lie. That's where I'm impressed by 'Them' (written and directed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud). This is one of those films where you know there's a threat, and you know some bad sh*t's going to go down, but they make sure not to show you what exactly is happening. Unlike many horror films these days, they don't focus on blood and gore as a shock factor (Don't get me wrong, I love blood and gore and the like, but it's not exactly scary). Clementine, a woman who is teaching French in Romania, lives in an out of the way estate with her boyfriend / husband Lucas. One night after coming home from work and spending the evening with Lucas, Clementine is awoken by strange noises outside of her window. She wakes up Lucas and he's unconcerned until realizing that someone has moved Cl?mentine's car, and when they go back inside and the power goes out, things start to spiral. I won't say any more than that, seeing as it would take away from the film. This is really more of a psychological thriller, and the ending is fantastic. It literally sent shivers down my spine, it was just really effin creepy. If you ever get the chance to go see it, you should. It's good to watch in the dark with a few friends, group reactions are the best.
