Caity Vs. The Fold

We have done many interviews on this site with all sorts of different bands. We have been very fortunate to talk to some of the people we have, and we're always psyched to release a new interview to you readers no matter who it is. I can honestly say that I haven't been this psyched about an interview in a long time. I adore the Chicago-based rock band The Fold, they are by far one of my favorite bands! (Check out everyone's thoughts and feelings on The Fold in our February 2011 Band of the Month feature!) So naturally when I had the chance to email them a few questions, I jumped on it!

"It's such a great feeling to be able to express yourself in such an artistic way." - The Fold

We like to start off all of our interviews with introductions, can you tell us who you are and what you do for the band?

Dan-Vocals/Guitar/Song, Writing Mark-Drums, Matt-Bass/Vocals, George-Guitar/Vocals Joe Martin- Marketing, Managing, Web design, Merch, occasional guitar, & comedy.

How about a little history of the band, how did The Fold form?

The band formed in 2002. Dan had been drumming in the Major Label Band Showoff which had seen some good exposure and then fizzled out shortly after their big break. Dan decided his love and passion for making music wasn't going to end there. That's when he made the transition to lead singer/frontman and started THE FOLD.

How would you describe your live show to someone who had never seen you play before?

Fun, Energetic, crazy and one heck of a good time!

According to your website, you're working on a new record, what can we expect to hear in the future?

Hopefully by summer time. We are just enjoying the writing process and being picky with our songs. We've got around a full albums worth of songs as we speak, however, we don't know if we think they are all "Worthy" to be on this new record. Once we are all completely satisfied with the song bank we have, we'll release the record. We may even do something with the additional songs like come out with a "B-sides" album.

What is it that fuels your passion to keep going in this industry?

The love for music and to be able to entertain. It's such a great feeling to be able to express yourself in such an artistic way. We all love what we're doing and music has been a big part of our lives since we were all teenagers.

What do you think each member of The Fold brings that's special to the band? What does each of you contribute to the band dynamic?

We all bring a lot of cool stuff to the table. Some of us are more musically creative and others are more business minded. Between the 5 of us (4 members + our MVP Joe Martin) we all are pretty diverse. Dan & Georgie excel in the musical writing and artist area, where Mark, Joe & Matt are a little more business minded. We are all really well rounded in music so it's a good match up. Plus, we all are pretty goofy so we all bring a ton of comedy and humor to the equation as well. Put it all together and what to you get? A 5 man circus! Again I can't stress enough that we all love what we do!

What inspires your lyrics? Is there one specific lyric that means the most to you?

Life experiences. There's no better feeling in the world that putting your emotions in a song. Instead of saying your feelings, you can scream them out loud! It's a great way to vent! Life definitely provides a lot of ups and downs that can inspire so many different songs!

We have a few questions for you that were submitted by our readers:

From Liam Hart, 19, from Sonoma California: "I am in a band and I think we're pretty good, but I was wondering if you had any advice for kids who are in bands and trying to give the music business a try."

Give it your best shot, don't let anyone say "You can't do it." Also, make sure you have an alternative plan in case you find along the way that the music biz isn't for you.

From Megan Forrest, 15, from Edison Texas: "What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?"

Being able to play music and make a living doing it. Yes we have.

From Sarah White, 17, from Clarington, Ontario: "What kind of message are you trying to get out with the band?"

Listen to the Beatles record backwards and you'll hear "Paul is dead" Next time you're listing to the Fold listen backward and you might hear a different message. Haha, j/k.

At The Sound Faction, we like to end all of our interviews by asking five random questions, to end the interview on a light note, are you up for it?

NOPE! But here, goes anyway! They aren't all 100% true, we're just being goof balls!

Which is worse, Cheeto fingers or juice mustaches?

Cheeto Mustache & Juice Fingers! Those are great!

What is your favorite and least favorite dance craze?

The Tango & The Tango

If you could have one non-standard super power, what would it be?

The ability to eat trees!

If you could be a music legend for one day, who would you be and how would you abuse the power?

Dan- John Major, Matt & Mark- Kurt Cobain, George- Fat Mike, Joe- Ru Paul

What's the most random thought that's ever gone through your head on stage?

"Is my fly open? I feel a draft" Or "I've really gotta poop right now and if I keep jumping it might come out.....Let's hope we fly through this setlist"

And finally, we'll wrap this up by giving you a shameless self-promotion spot, anything you'd like to add?
