Jen vs. The Downtown Fiction
So, as you all have figured out, we here at The Sound Faction like to find new music. Caity enjoys going through Myspace and finding new bands…well, I’m not good at Myspace, but I rather enjoy hitting up Pure Volume and seeing what it has to offer. That is exactly how I came across The Downtown Fiction. As soon as I heard the first song I was looking for a way to contact these guys for an interview. And they were kind enough to agree to one! They haven’t been a band for very long, but they are incredible. I strongly suggest checking out The Downtown Fiction. You will not regret it in any way! “We just want as many people to hear it as possible. Hopefully they enjoy it.” For our readers who don’t know who you are, could you please introduce yourself and what you do for the band? We are The Downtown Fiction from Fairfax, Virginia. We've been a band since September 2008. Our lineup is Cameron Leahy (guitar/vocals), David Pavluk (bass/vocals) and Eric Jones (drums/samples) How did The Downtown Fiction come to be, and where did the name come from? Cameron and Eric started playing music together in high school. When college started, they met David who worked at a local venue in the area and, on a whim, started jamming. He joined the band a few months later, and now the band is looking forward to releasing an EP in February 2009, as well as going tour that same month. The band name, in part, came from one of our favorite movies, Pulp Fiction. Kind of a tribute to that, and we though Downtown flowed well with it. Had some underlying meaning that was kind of cool and cryptic. You guys are a fairly new band on the scene, and I'm quite impressed at how well you perform and record together already! What do you think it is that makes you work so well together and produce such impressive results already? Well since Eric and Cameron have been playing together for so long, it was kind of like an extension of all that hard work. And with David in the band, we've now got such a tight knit group...we just work really well together. You’re about to release your EP in February, what can we look forward to hearing on it? It will include the 4 songs that we've released so far, as well as 2 never-been-heard tracks! You have a bunch of shows coming up, what is your favorite part about playing a live show? As funny as it sounds, the best part is finishing. You just get that wave of ecstasy. Kind of like doing a hard workout and getting all those endorphins. What is your favorite song to play live, and which one gets the best reaction from the crowd?
No Typical Thursday Night is our usual closer, and we always get really into it. I think it's an awesome song to play live, it translates really well... has a very raw quality to it. Jens Note: This is actually my favorite TDF song! :) Just anything that strikes my (Cameron) interest...whether its a relationship issue or just a thought on life, it might even happen in someone else's life and I'm just a witness.
What other artists are you inspired by? What do you take from that inspiration that applies to your music? Well I (Cameron) grew up on a lot of Rolling Stones, but by the time I reached pre-teen age I was listening to Blink 182 nonstop. They'll always be that band that defines my childhood. But I'm pretty eclectic, I've been listening to a lot of Of Montreal lately, among others. Do you have an ultimate goal for your music, are there any things you know you want to accomplish with it? We just want as many people to hear it as possible. Hopefully they enjoy it. What can we expect from The Downtown Fiction in the future? We're really not sure ourselves! Sameless self promotion time. Anything you think we should know about TDF and anything you want to say to your fans. Now is the time! Thanks to anyone reading, really hope you'll give us a chance if you haven't already heard us. And thank you to our fans for the daily love and support they give us. We couldn't do it without you. Here at The Sound Faction we are five of the most random girls. So we like to end our interviews on a less serious note by asking five random questions. If you’re not up for it that is not a problem! We're down. : ) What is the one female fashion trend that absolutely confuses you? Really long fingernails. If you were a scented candle, what would you smell like? Freshly baked cinnamon rolls. What was your 5am Saturday morning cartoon? Rocko's Modern Life, Doug, Spongebob What girly movie do you secretly love? The Notebook. Tear jerker, dude.. Who would you want to win a date with? Taylor Swift. We would like to thank the guys in The Downtown Fiction for taking the time to talk to us. If you are up for rocking out, check them out at their PureVolume, or their MySpace.
