Caity vs. The Colours

This is the part where I tell you that I went cruising on MySpace, and stumbled across a goldmine of a band, contacted them and interviewed them to bring them to your attention. But this time, not so much. I went cruising on unsigned.com and stumbled across a goldmine-- oh I know, you've heard the whole thing before, but let me tell you what, when I came across "The Colours", their song "Minutes and Hours" started playing and I was stunned. This very well be my best network-site find ever. Will I alienate people if I say that? I don't know... but I do know that you will NOT regret checking out this band.

"I think it's a form of therapy for me. To deal with issues as insignificant as a monotonous job or as important as the loss of someone close to you."
- Tom Pickford: The Colours

For our readers who don't know who you are, could you please introduce yourself and what you do for the band?

Tom Pickford - Lead Vocals, keyboards and guitar

Tom Newman - Backing vocals, synths and bass

Tony Folland - Drums

How and when did The Colours form, and what influenced the decision to form a band?

We met and formed at the end of 2004. Tony and Tom N had been at the same school, I (TP) worked with tony as a lifeguard when Tom N decided he wanted to start a band. We were originally a 4, but have evolved into the current lineup which has been going since January 2008.

Your MySpace page features two songs: Minutes and Hours, and For You that don't appear on your EP Aurora Borealis, or the Something New single: does that mean that The Colours fans can look forward to a new album?

Yes they can. Or even our debut album towards the end of 2009, we're still writing it at the moment but Minutes and Hours and For You are demos of the sort of thing we're up to.

You're based out of Reading, UK How is the local scene there? Did you find it particularly hard to crack into?

There's a scene I suppose. But only because there's a few good bands who come from Reading. I don;t think we'd include ourselves as part of a scene at the moment. We're too busy!

For those readers who haven't seen you play live, can you describe your live show? What gets the best reaction from the crowd?

I think when we play live, what's important to us is to try and get our songs across. So we try and give the most polished performance we can of the songs, whilst trying to remember what we like about going to live shows. The best live gigs for me are the ones that create an atmosphere that the audience can belong to, whether you want them to dance or to lull them into a meditative state, you have to create that yourself.

What inspires your lyrics? Is there one specific lyric that means the most to you?

Anything important to us at the time will inspire lyrics, the album is the best example at the moment, which has really been started at the tail end of 2008. When things happen to you, you can't help but let it affect your songwriting. I think it's a form of therapy for me. To deal with issues as insignificant as a monotonous job or as important as the loss of someone close to you.

What kind of message are you trying to get out with the band?

Ultimately, to try not to let everything affect you too much. Be aware of things by all means, but remember life goes on and it's about enjoying it!

What has been the biggest moment for the band? What has been the biggest challenge?

We're in the middle of our biggest challenge I suppose, in trying to finish an album! And hopefully the completion of that will come with a great sense of achievement. But highlights for us so far would have to include most of the live dates of last year. We played at Guilfest in the Summer and then completed our first real tour. In September we travelled from Milan to Glasgow, playing nearly everywhere in between.

The music industry is a rough one to be in, What fuels your passion to keep going?

We're not very good at anything else. I don't know if it's that rough to be in. You just have to come up with something really good that everyone wants. Like any other business I suppose.

So where can people access your music online? Where can they hear you?

The best way to keep up to dat with new album demos is to sign up to our mailing list at www.thecolours.co.uk or to visit our myspace site - www.myspace.com/thecoloursreading

Our two previous releases are both available to download from itunes, and hard copies can be ordered through our website or from www.readysounds.com

Here at the Sound Faction we are five of the most random people you will ever meet, so we like to end our interviews on a less serious note with five random questions.

What is your hidden talent?

It’s hidden, so I can’t tell you!

What was the first album that you ever purchased?

I don't think I had bought an album until oasis and blur came out, I think Definitely Maybe was my first. But the first albums I had when I was younger were Beatles and Beach Boys records. Amongst other 60's music.

If you could pass a law for the world, what would it be?

There should be lanes on pavements for people walking at different paces.

Who would you want to win a date with?

David Beckham

If you could be the champion of anything, what would it be?

Golf.

And here's your shameless self-promo spot: anything you'd like to add about yourselves, the music, or anything else?

Be our friends because we love you
