Jen vs. The Cab

I’m not going to lie. I had honestly only heard OF The Cab, I had never gotten around to listening to their stuff. Then my friend sent me to their Myspace and I heard a couple songs and I honestly really enjoyed them. But it wasn’t until I received their CD that I found out I actually really liked them. In no time I found myself rocking out to Whisper War. It’s a fun album to dance around your room to. Which I did as I was packing to move! The guys in person really surprised me. In a good way of course. They are very mature for their age (which is younger than me, which I had no idea about!!), they truly love what they are doing and are just so thankful for the chance to do it. SO, for all of those who have not heard The Cab before, check them out. You will not stop dancing. (We seriously didn’t stop dancing at the show!)

“We are more than thankful to have done even half the stuff we’ve done. It’s very surreal.”
Cash Colligan, The Cab.

For our readers who don’t know who you are, could you please introduce yourself and what you do for the band?

Alex D: I’m Alex DeLeon and I sing.
Cash: Cash Colligan, I play Bass
Alex M: Alex Marshall, I play Piano.
Alex J: Alex Johnson, I play drums.

How did The Cab come to be, and where did the name come from?

Cash: Ah, my garage. No, me and Singer actually didn’t get along our freshmen year of high school. But for some reason we were both on vacation to our dad’s house, which happened to both be in Northern California, so we ended up talking, getting over our little feuds, and when we got back into town for tenth grade, before the year started, that summer. Got together did a couple of acoustic jams, wanted to do a little more with it. Picked up Johnson on drums. And the name just came from sitting there and me blurting out the most random things off the top of my head. It wasn’t anything special but it also wasn’t anything over the top.

What exactly inspires your lyrics, and is there one specific one that means the most to you?

Alex D: Um, I think its kind of song, by song. Ya know, with what inspires the lyrics. It could be anything from personal experience, or, also, it could have nothing to do with me. Ya know, it could just be a story. Or it could be like a metaphor for something that I’m going through. My favorite lyrics, I like the hopeful, kind of positive ones. One lyric that I really like, always been one of my favorites, it’s super simple, its “remain the same,” just kind of like a phrase. And it’s just kind of like, stay true to yourself and who you are don’t change for anyone. And there is actually a clothing company…

Cash : Yeah.

Alex D (continued) : that started out of it. And it was just the coolest feeling ever. Especially because it is one of my favorite lyrics. And its so simple. I don’t think that great lyrics have to be, crazy words or super out there. I think as long as you get a good point across. That is all that matters.

Well that’s a good message! What are some of your major influences when writing music?

Alex D: Like, Musically?

Cash: Life.

(laughs)

Cash: Life is a good motivation!

Alex D: Living, waking up! Um I mean everything, obviously listening to music inspired me to want to write music. But just going through certain things. And it could be any kind of emotion. Like if you’re in a super over the top good mood, or ya know, at least I know when I’m that way, I kinda wanna go write a song. And I’m sure I speak for a lot of them to. If I’m really, mad or in like, a super bad mood, I also wanna go write music. Obviously the moods of the songs will be a little bit different. I just kinda think that anything that can provoke feelings or emotions kinda makes you wanna get out there and express what you’re feeling.

Do you have an ultimate goal for your music and are there any things you know you want to accomplish with it?

Cash: I think the four of us can agree that we have more then I thought we ever would so far. So now we are just taking the ride and seeing where else we can go with it. Like, we are more than thankful to have done even half the stuff we’ve done. It’s very surreal.

Alex D: I think every band kinda wants to be the biggest band ever. That’s kinda impossible. It’s probably always going to go to The Beatles or something. I dunno. You want as many people as possible to hear your music and to like it and enjoy it. So you work hard and you hope that it never tops off. You hope you can just keep going as long as you can. You look at bands like, The Rolling Stones, who are still touring and they are like, One hundred and twelve years old. (laughs) like, it’s awesome. It’s super admirable. And there’s a lot of respect for people who can do that. Like, Bon Jovi can go to New York and sell out giant stadiums for like, five nights. And that’s like one hundred thousand people total or something. That is just like, so impressive and obviously, well nobody will ever probably be that big. You just kinda shoot for the stars and hope that you do well. That you can see a lot of places and meet a lot of new people on the way.

So do you hope to still be touring when you’re one hundred and twelve?

Cash: Well maybe, considering my back doesn’t go out by then. It might be a possibility. I think I have another year left!

(laughs)

For anyone who hasn’t seen you live, can you describe a live show?

Cash: I think we try to bring as much energy as we can in the thirty minutes we have. I mean, obviously we’re doing all these drives, we’re doing all the, not pain and suffering but we’re doing all the ropes. I mean, we’re nine in a van right now but I think our main goal is after all the suffering and all the hardship, we have thirty minutes to just show people what we’re about. We take advantage of those full thirty minutes.

Alex D: You kind of want to be solid musically, and as tight as a band as possible, while not sacrificing the energy. And vies versa. Yah know, be as energetic as you can without sacrificing the sound. I think that’s what we all as a band, kind of go for. We all want to put on as good of a show as possible. But if you sound bad, while doing so it doesn’t make sense. Try to do as much as you can of everything.

How did it feel to be on Blender Magazines, Hot List. And Alternative Press Magazines, Bands You Need To Know 08’?

Cash: that was the first press we ever received. It’s actually framed at my house. It was like, the first thing I’d ever seen, just like, this is awesome, We’re in a magazine. This is friggin sweet!

Alex D: We were hotter then Brittanyspears.com.

Cash: Scarlett Johansson was seventy-four, and we were seventy-five. And she’s hot! She’s hot!

Alex M: That’s pretty good, she’s hot!

Alex D: She barely beat us!

(laughs)

Cash: I mean, she’s much better looking than any of us, by far!!

Alex D: Let it be known. That we are one spot away, and we are nipping at her heals right now!

(laughs)

Cash: We are taking you out next year Scarlett. We are taking you out! It’s game over! Prince was like, sixty-nine too, I was just like wow this is awesome!

She's gonna bring it now!

(laughs)

Alex D: yeah, it’s on!

(laughs)

Cash: It’s on Scarlett!

Jen's Sidenote: …he really isn’t calling her on! Swear!

What has been the best moment for the band and what has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

Cash: Today.

Alex M: Yes.

Cash: I mean, honestly everyday I think…

Alex M: She’s like, What?! (Pointing to me.)

(laughs)

Yeah I was like, um…does that mean we are a challenge? I’m sorry!

(Laughs)

Alex M and Cash: No, no!

Cash: Everyday, and I think everyone can agree, is a new challenge. You always have something else to top what you just did. So for us today, considering we’re on this tour, I think this show we obviously want to do better than we’ve done, every other show. That’s all that I meant by today.

Alex D: I think our biggest accomplishment. There are so many that stand out like, getting signed is obviously huge. The first time we ever opened, well the only time we’ve ever opened for Fall Out Boy was this little chain reaction show and that was huge for me, they were one of my favorite bands growing up. Being on FNMtv was super cool! Juts like, being able to go in front of a huge screen and see our video premiere.

Cash: Those lights are nuts!

Jen's note: Please note that right before Cash made the comment about the lights, he was imitating them!

Alex D: Our first time on TRL, being interviewed by Snoop Dogg. There are a lot of cool moments, yah know what I mean, that kinda.

Alex M: Going to Japan.

Alex D: Yeah, our first overseas tour. There are so many so it’s kind of hard to put a finger on one and say that was our favorite or most memorable. Because so many are so memorable for us. It’s like choosing your favorite kid. Can’t do it.

Well I hope you wouldn’t be able to!

(Laughs)

What fuels your passion for what you do?

Cash: Fans. Life. Everything in your life that can motivate you to keep making music. Ex-Girlfriends, Ex-boyfriends if you’re a female artist. Anything that makes you want to do what you’re doing.

Alex D: I look at is as a few different ways. But one way I look at it is like, how many people in the world are there? Like six billion or something like that. And it’s kind of easy to get lost in the sea of people, and the sea of normality, and stuff like that. And to have a chance kinda be someone. Whether it’s for a few years, or whether you make some kind of imprint on history, like Bono from U2. He is so caught up in the world affairs and stuff. And he is actually doing his part to help change the world and make a difference. I think, by being a musician and being in the limelight and the spotlight and having the resources and the ability to kinda be more than just…uh…someone, yah know? Kinda make a name for yourself. Make yourself proud and make everyone else proud of you. I just think that’s a super cool opportunity and I definitely want to make something of it. I think everyone kinda wants to be someone. And the people in bands have the unique opportunity to do so.

What can we expect from you guys in the future?

Alex M: Touring.

Alex D: I don’t even think we know what to expect from us in the future.

Cash: Just touring, music. Typical things you expect out of any band you listen to. We just have to keep carrying on. Go this way (moves his hand up.) not this way (moves his hand down.)

That’s a good way to go!

(Laughs)

Cash: that’s what we’re trying.

Here at the Sound Faction we are five of the most random people you will ever meet, so we like to end our interviews on a less serious note with five random questions. Are you up for that?

Cash: Hell yeah!

What Power Ranger would you be and why?

Alex D: Jason.

Jen's note. His answer was actually given before I even finished the question. Which prompted everyones’ reactions!

(laughs)

Cash: Whoa!!

(laughs)

Cash: Damn, I gotta think for a second. What was the green one? The green one of the white one!

I think the Green one eventually became the white one.

Alex D: Yeah, Jason. That was my answer. Jason became the white ranger.

Jen's note: The Green Ranger was actually Tommy.

Cash: Well then I can’t do that one. Kimberly was hot. The original Pink one. When they were actually in the power ranger outfit.

Alex D: Dude, Jason had Kimberly!! Like, I’m thinking man! Jason had the girl, and the cool costumes.

Cash: Well yah know what…

So you’d be the pink one, is that what you’re saying?

(laughs)

Cash: So technically, ah…

(Alex DeLeon puts his arm around Cash…as he is the pink one!)

Aww.

(laughs)

Alex M: We (points to Alex Johnson) just decided to be whoever is left!

Alex D: You can be Billy!

Alex J: I was into the Ninja Turtles.

It was a toss up between a Ninja Turtle one, or the Power Ranger one!

Alex J: Yeah I wasn’t really a Power Ranger guy, I was more of a Ninja Turtle guy.

Cash to Alex M: You could be the yellow one!

Alex M: Yeah, I’ll be the yellow one. Cash, we can be the girls.

Cash: ...Girl power.

What was your favorite Halloween costume as a kid?

Cash: The one I just wore two days ago, I was a rat! It was so awesome!

(laughs)

Alex M: I was a Chili Pepper.

Alex D: I had a favorite costume. One year I was a Wolfman one year. My dad was always really good at making my costumes. He put like all this hair all over my face with that glue stuff, whatever that glue is called.

Cash: Adhesive something.

Alex D: So he put it on me. I looked awesome! It was the coolest costume for an eight year old. Then my dad didn’t get the remover so I couldn’t get the hair off my face. And I was like, crying and like trying to get it and my skin was like coming off. I had to wear the wolfman hair for two days until my dad found the remover.

Cash: Did you have to go to school and stuff?

Alex D: Yeah! So I was like the wolfman for three days. (laughs) It was like I hit puberty tens years to soon!

Alex J: I was a Banana.

Cash: He had a mustache. It was pretty epic. I think we actually decided he was a Chikita Banana because he had this whole Spanish thing going on with his mustache and a little hat.

(laughs)

That is awesome! If you were a scented candle, what would you smell like?

Cash: Sent to Canada?

(laughs)

Alex J: Scented candle!

(laughs)

Thank you! I’m sorry!

Cash: Oh I thought you were like, if you were sent to Canada. I was going to be like, well I smell like shit right now!

(laughs)

Jen's note: Cash smelled himself as he answered!

Cash: Um, Pumpkin spice. I dunno, my mom buys those!

Alex D: I love um, my mom always had this Vanilla Bean one and it always smelled really good.

Alex M: Passion fruit.

Nice!

Alex J: My mom always used to buy this like, sea breeze candle. It smelled really good.

Cash: those are good. Refreshing in the bathroom. Just welcome you in.

If you were president for a day, what would be the first law you would abolish?

Cash: Abolish or create?

Manda: Either Or.

Cash: Public nudity.

Manda: ...Mandatory or optional?

Cash: Optional.

(Laughs)

Okay!

(laughs) Cash: Optional, non-offensive public nudity. Like if you’re going to offend someone by being naked, you can’t be naked.

Alex D: I think that’s why there is a law now. Because people take offense to it. You can’t say that.

Cash: Yeah but see, we have no option. It’s a hit or miss. Like, you go outside walk around with no pants on and people get offended, then I couldn’t do it can it? I’d get a citation for walking the streets naked. How do your people feel about it in Canada?

Manda: I think we’re okay with topless.

Jen: Are we?

Cash: Are you?!

Manda: Yeah, I think...

Alex M: Yeah but no one will do it because it’s too damn cold!

(laughs)

Cash: I heard something like that, that’s why I asked.

Manda: Yeah I think we’re okay with topless.

Alex D: If I were president for a day, I wouldn’t abolish or make a law. I would take the day off. Throw some big party in the white house. Bowl in the bowling alley. Watch movies in the private movie theatre. Just party it up for one day in the coolest house in the world.

Cash: Dude, if you were the president you could pull so many people to your party. Be like, “Yo Jordan, what up dude, come on!!”

(laughs)

Alex D: Yeah man. P. Diddy would be stoked to go to your party! I guess that’s a really sad answer. There is like a big election coming up and I could say something that would actually like, help the country or the world.

Cash: But that’s their job. You would throw a fatty party, and I would tell people to walk around naked.

(laughs)

It would be a naked party!

Cash: People would show up to your party naked because that’s the law. Then we would have to invite Megan Fox.

Alex D: If Megan Fox was there everyone else would be kicked out! I would be in the Abraham Lincoln suite with her.

Manda: With the naked Megan Fox?

(laughs)

Alex M: With Cash's law that he passed.

Alex D: Yes!

Alex M: Except it's not optional!

Cash: I would be president the first day then singer would hop into office. It would be a perfect system.

Alex D: I would pass a law that Megan Fox had to be with me all times…That’s a good law!! I just came up with my law.

(laughs)

If you could have lunch with any fictional character who would it be and why?

Cash: One of the Animorphs. Remember those?

Yes!

Jen's note: Manda and I are actually Animroph fans!

(laughs)

Cash: the one that turns into the lizard. Definitely would have lunch with that dude!

Alex D: Tigger. Would be fun. Just like, jump on his back and he would bounce around. Me and Tigger I think would be really close. Like best friends forever!

Alex J: I dunno man.

Alex M: I don’t know either.

Alex D: (Whispering) Tinkerbell!

Alex M: Oh she’s sexy! Tinkerbell!

(laughs)

Isn’t she like this big though? (hold fingers a few inches apart)

Alex M: She’s still sexy.

Cash: Or Ariel from The Little Mermaid.

Alex J: Yeah. Yeah. I’ll go Ariel.

Cash: She’s sexy.

(laughs)

Alex J: Yo what’s the crabs name again?

Sebastian?

Alex J: Sebastian! I would have lunch with Sebastian. That’d be tight.

Alex D: You know who the hottest Disney character that gets over look is Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. She gets overlooked cause she’s not a princess, she’s only like a gypsy but she’s hotter then all the princesses, yah know what I mean? She’s got the long dark hair, green eyes, the sexy body.

Cash: The whole exotic thing going on. Belly dances. She’s got like, the half shirt.

Jen's Note: Cash was actually trying to belly dance!

Alex D: You get the Disney female backpacks and it’s like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White.

It’s all about the Disney Princesses.

Alex D: Yeah! But like, Esmeralda smokes all of them and she gets no credit, and it really upsets me. She’s hotter than all of them. All of the Disney Princesses have horrible haircuts. Like Snow Whites hair cut, what is that?! It’s like a bob, but a weird bob. It’s just awkward! Esmeralda had sexy hair!

Manda: I love the amount of thought that was put into that!

Jen: Yeah, it was epic!

Cash: we think a lot in a van...

Do you think about Esmeralda a lot?

(Alex DeLeon nods his head yes.)

(Laughs)

Alex D: When you’re not home for four months, kinda nothing else to think about.

(Laughs)
