Since When Do Vampires Sparkle?

This is something that has been bugging me for a very long time. I’ve been meaning to sit down and write a little bitty rant about how annoying the whole thing really is. Now, I don’t want to bash anyone, especially writers for books that sit on my bookshelf, but here goes. VAMPIRES DO NOT SPARKLE! Yes, that is just how angry sparkly vampires make me. At this point I am sure that everyone and their dog knows about the Twilight series, I am sure 99.9% of you reading this has seen the character known as Edward sparkle on the screen when he walks into the sun.

Now, I grew up reading Anne Rice, which is filled with darkness and fear and beauty. She never made her glorious in depth vampires sparkle, she didn’t need to. I grew up on vampires with fangs, vampires who tore into flesh and took human life without batting an eyelash (okay so a couple of her vampires were squeamish and didn’t exactly like killing humans but you know). That is what a vampire is, that is what it has been since the beginning of time, remember Dracula? I mean vampires aren’t supposed to be able to walk in the daylight (like Twilight or the phenom known as The Vampire diaries), they ARE supposed to have fangs (granted TVD is a little different then what my rant is about).

I know every writer tries to be unique, and make things their own, but there are some things that just can’t be changed without pissing off a whole group of people. I mean granted her idea, unique in its own right, but why change something that is so ingrained in history. To be honest, it’s ruining vampires. Its ruining the image of what for so long has been a perfect solid depiction of a classic. It sort of makes me a little bit angry and a lot more frustrated.

Yes, I know this rant might be a little pointless, and it might piss all you die hard twilight fanatics off, but at the same time I think you should all pick up Anne Rice or any other equally what I like to call “fact based” vampire fiction, and enjoy what Vampires are all about. It is my opinion that today’s generation just isn’t getting the right depiction of what it’s all about. They are being sucked into a world, where the vampire can be your boyfriend and you can live happily ever after together. That just isn’t the case that very much pleases me or over half the vampire lovers out there. We like the deep dark mystery that is involved with it, the fear that we can ride along with. Tell me, where is the fear in a daylight walking sparkly vampire, who falls in love with a mortal girl? It’s sort of laughable isn’t it?.
