Silver Snakes - Pictures of a Floating World

Before today I had never heard of the Los Angeles band Silver Snakes. At first, to be honest, I was a little turned off by the band's name "Silver Snakes" getting judgemental images of a second-rate band. But don't let the band name fool you they should have Golden in their title. Silver Snakes list their genre as Indie Rock/Post Hardcore. The members of the band are, Alex Estrada (guitar and vocals), Mike Trujillo (bass), Justin Coates (guitar), and last but not least Daniel Pouliot (drums).

The band has web presence on both Facebook and Twitter, you can check out their facebook page at facebook.com/yearofthesnakes, or follow their twitter page @Silver_Snakes, and of course you can check them out on their homepage at: yearofthesnakes.com.

The band describes themselves as being "raised in the 90's", but what is not said in their description is that they are (in my opinion) one of the BEST indie bands I've heard come from the west coast. They are a very well put together band (instrumentally and song structure-wise), which differentiates them from many new Indie bands.

Their Facebook bio is sweet and to the point: "Silver Snakes are here with their debut album, Pictures Of A Floating World. The southern California rockers have been perfecting their sound in other bands (Horse the Band, Cathedrals, Death Art Bleeding kansas and Dear Life) for years. With influences such as Lack, Hum, Cave In, and Recover, technicality and pure emotion are evident in all they produce." The band cites influences of Lack, At The Drive In, Engine Down, Quicksand, Mewithoutyou, Waxwing, Recover, and Hum. Now to get to the point of this whole review, the music! If you're like me and you love good music, you'll love them! Here are my thoughts on the record, track by track!

Track 1: New Light
Well to start off this track I feel should have been last on the album. I mean come on, save the best for last! Since starting this review, I've gotten this song firmly stuck in my head! The beginning instrumentals are excellent, the singer has one hell of a voice, the drums are well put together in the song, I can actually hear the bass (which is a big plus!), and both guitars are great! If you have never heard Silver Snake before, definitely start with this track!

Track 2: Lungs and Lanterns
I give this song a 4 ½ stars, although it's still really good! This songs is an easy to listen to song and makes you want to hit that replay button over and over! These guys know what they're doing unlike some bands I listen to and know of (no names!)

Track 3: Echo Eyes
Yet again another good song, but I will say that in the beginning of the song, I was unable to understand most of the words. However, I loved the instrumentals so much that it keps me from skipping over the song like normally would have done.

Track 4: Rebuild Us
Honestly these song are all alike to me... Awesome. All these songs are just great, and I'm sure I'll never get bored of listening to them! The band has great messages, amazing instrumentals, and simply fantastic songs! I believe that true music is music you can listen to and never skip a track, and this album is falling firmly in that category for me!

Track 5: I Am the Flood
I really am having a hard time thinking of anymore words of praise to say about these songs but I'll try. This song is an easy listen, beautifully sung, with amazing instrumentals. It's not my favorite on the album, but I still can't stop listening to it. I don't think half of the bands out there could come up with lyrics like theses ones.

Track 6: Act I – Sevilla the Soothsayer
I think this song reminds me the most of the music I used to listen to in the 90's. If you lived in the 90's (or are a fan of the music of that era) it will definitely make you think back. I could sleep to this song every night and wake up refreshed. This track is definitely one of my must-hear tracks from this album!

Track 7: Dear Midnight
What a voice on Alex Estrada! Not to mention just how damn talented all of these guys are! They know what there doing. I see a long and productive future for Silver Snakes, they are the new of the new, the best of the best and this track is enough to make me want to buy this album!

Track 8: Constant
This an OK track, at first that is. But once you start listening closely to the message the band is conveying, I fell for it! There's never a bad song in this album, even when I think it's not starting out to be my favorite, they always seem to grab me and pull me into it!

Track 9: Let Down Your Anchor
This is a slow song, it's the kind of song you and your significant other would dance to on a warm summer night. This song makes me want to get out of my chair, grab my lady and dance the night away.

Track 10: Act II – An Evolution In Movement
Everybody get on your feet and start rocking out! This is definitely the most up beat "rock song" on the album. Move your feet, jump around, and listen as Silver Snakes make the Modern Rock style kill-it, instead of the passe kind of junk that all too often litters the airwaves. This is by far one of my favorite rock songs since I discovered Nirvana, seriously!
