Jen vs. Rosedale
Honestly this is the first time I’ve ever interviewed a band without checking them out first. But they seemed like so much fun from the second I met them that I couldn’t pass up this chance to do a very much spur of the moment interview with the guys from Rosedale! When I got home and went to their Myspace I knew that my spur of the moment decision to interview them was totally a good idea!! The interview was so much fun and their music is awesome! And they are in this. After seeing a picture on Emersons phone of their van after it had flipped, and they are still going strong, it was easy to see that they love what they are doing. “We actually were a part of something and I think that that made us realize, Wow, this is what we actually wanna do.” For our readers who don’t know who you are, could you please introduce yourself and what you do for the band? Mike Z: We’re Rosedale!! Emerson: Rosedale! Mike Z: What do we do? Mike L: We Rock and Roll! Rock and Roll is what we do! Mike Z: Um basically… Mike L: We gotta introduce ourselves. I’m Mike Liorti, the lead singer and guitarist for Rosedale. Mike Z: The six foot nine one. Mike L: That was one of the questions man, now you’ve ruined it! (Laughs) Mike Z: How tall are you?! Mike L: I’m six nine. (Laughs) Mike Z: I’m Mike as well. I’m Mike Zancai and I play Bass and backup vocals. Emerson: I’m Emerson Tavares and I play the drums in Rosedale. Mitch: I’m Mitch Sousa and I also play guitar along with Mike! Where are you guys from and how does the music scene treat you there? Emerson: Brampton, and the music scene in Brampton… Mike Z: Has died! Mike L: Inconsistent. Emerson: Sketchy. Mike L: No, Its um…the kids are great. Emerson: Oh, yeah. Mike L: Sometimes it’s a little unorganized, but the kids come out because they love the music so I guess that’s good! Emerson: We don’t have a problem with any of the kids in any way. It’s just some promoters. We always end up getting screwed in some way. Mike L: Yeah, we’re still the babies of the scene, so we don’t really know. (Laughs) Mike Z: I like rocking the GTA, they give us more respect than our hometown. Emerson: Yeah. Like we come here, and we get love! And its awesome! Do you play a lot of shows here? Mike Z: Toronto itself? We’ve played a few shows. And they were alright, but we don’t play as many shows as we do in like smaller towns where we get a lot more of people coming out to see us, rather than us playing on another bands bill and they end up seeing us and are like, ‘Alright, I’ll check this band out. They’re good.’ So, that’s how any band gets fans. But here, Toronto is a big place, so it’s hard to keep trying. Emerson: especially the music scene in Toronto. Other than these kinds of shows there’s a lot of… Jens note: We were actually waiting to go into an All Time Low, Mayday Parade, The Maine and Every Avenue show. Mike Z: Like bars and stuff that throw shows and we… Mike L: It’s not as mainstream. Emerson: It’s Indie. Mike Z: And we like coming out to shows of bands that obviously we enjoy listening to, and that influence us. So when we show up and people as us what our band is doing we are like, ‘Well, if you’re at this show, you would definitely come to our show.’ Yah know? The only show that we would go to that wouldn’t exactly resemble us is Underoath, cause we are all Underoath fans. What made you decide to start a band? Mike Z: Um…the girls! (Laughs) Emerson: No. That’s just this one (pointing to Mike Z) Mike Z: No. Actually this band formed before I came along. Mike L: Yeah, it’s really more, Why did we decide to play instruments? I was sort of forced into playing piano in grade two. So you gotta kind of do what you’re forced to do! So I did that until I was …… but I always wanted to play guitar. Then I got a guitar and started doing that. And once I started playing guitar more, you eventually meet friends who play other instruments. Emerson: We (pointing to Mike L) actually went to the same elementary school. I quite frankly wasn’t even into music. Mike Z: He was a soccer star! Emerson: I could have been a soccer star. (Laughs) You look so disappointed! Emerson: No! Mike Z: Everyday we hear him talk about how he COULD have been a soccer star! (Laughs) Mitch: Not true. Not true at all! Emerson: I don’t talk like that. Mike Z: I have a short story. This morning I woke up, it was about nine o’clock. His (Emerson) mom wanted to sleep today cause she barely gets to sleep. He wakes up, starts banging on everything in his room cause he is drumming! He wakes up and he starts tapping away. And all day he is just thinking, listening to music, drumming along, air drums. Then we have practice, and after practice he will drum himself to sleep! He loves his instrument! (Laughs) Emerson: Yes, I do! That’s good though! Mitch: That’s basically how we all are. We all love our instruments and we love our music. Next step, all the time. Yah know? And that’s how we end up here with you guys, doing interviews! Mike Z: Tell the story of how you left soccer for drums. What happened Emmo? Emerson: I was on my way to England with soccer shit. My dad burnt me a CD. Red Hot Chili Peppers. Blood Sugar Sex Magik. That album changed my outlook on my whole life. Like, I want to do that. I wanna play drums. Like there is something about that drummer, Chad. I dunno…the way…his feel, his flow is unbelievable. Mike Z: So he got back, got a drum kit, started tapping away and practice makes perfect, practice makes perfect sense to me. Quote from Cute is What We aim For! (Laughs) Emerson: We eventually started to jam more, and Rosedale happened. Mike Z: Well basically with me starting Bass, I’m the bass player. One day I had a middle school come to my elementary school saying ‘next year you can start in band program and play an instrument’ and I was like Ahhh how lame, band geeks. But then I saw there was electric bass and was like, wow that’s pretty rad. So they had an assembly and were like ‘okay, we’re going to put on a performance for you guys of all the arts and you guys can decide if you guys wanna come to our school.’ So I saw this, and that night I had a dream that I was a rock star! Emerson: This guy eh?! Mike Z: So the next day I checked off the form and was like, Bass. That is what I wanna play. Then I checked off like trumpet and like, saxophone cause I had to pick two other things. And I didn’t want to play a wind instrument. Mike L: You didn’t want to play the flute?! Mike Z: No. Mike L: I played the flute in grade six! (Laughs) Mike Z: So I played bass all of middle school, all of high school. It was like, grade eleven, almost grade twelve when they were like ‘Yo, we need a bass player. We know your name can you come try out?’ Emerson: What time was it? Mike Z: One in the morning. Emerson: One in the morning when we let go of our old bassist do to commitment and just different outlooks on stuff. He wanted to do one style, but we didn’t really want to. Mike Z: We want everyone to dance and scream and dance and sing and laugh and love and just have a good time every single they see us. We want them to be like ‘Those are the guys we always have fun with. Not just the guys we can see from a distance from a four foot fence.’ Emerson: We are so down to earth, you can just come up to us and like… Mike L: (Laughs) we’re not down to earth, but we’re fun! Emerson: We are! …Well I am. What gets you pumped for a show and how do you feel after you play a set? Mike Z: Listening to bands that inspire me to play music right before I play music that makes me wanna play music and I’m like “I wanna do that right now!” and I cant wait to get on stage. Mitch: A little run through of what our choreography is going to be and a run through of how good you wanna look. Do you dance?! Mike Z: Oh we dance! Mitch: We do it all! Mike Z: We rock out! Do you really?! Like actual choreographed dances? Emerson: Oh, I’m always dancing! (Laughs) Mike L: I’m a really awkward dancer! Emerson: He’s tall, so everything he does is big. He moves his leg and its like WOAH he just moved his leg! (Laughs) Mike L: Every move I make is a dance because it’s a mission. Mike Z: We like to break out from our original songs into like, a bridge of like, a mainstream Hip-Hop or R&B or some random dance tune or Pop song. We like to do that. And everyone gets into it. We’ve been doing it for a long time and we’ve noticed lately that other bands are full out covering songs, like Punk Goes Crunk, All Time Low is on it, Forever The Sickest Kids. I’m like ‘Wow, we did that!’ then I hear it and I’m like ‘Looks like we just knew what was happening.’ Jens note. All Time Lows’ cover of Umbrella by Rihanna, is actually SO much better then the original, and I actually really like the original! Mike L: We used to do like, Avril and Jessica Simpson. Mike Z: We went through, Sean Kingston, MIA, Chris Brown. All kinds of artists where we’re like, ‘That’s a good time!’ Anything, Everything. You say we should do this, we will try to do it. Emerson: Also, the fans want to hear it, definitely whatever they enjoy. Mike Z: That’s how we get people involved. We go to play a show somewhere where we have zero fans cause like, no one will know about us. Emerson: There’s been a lot of times where we come to venues and people will kinda just be scattered around but as soon as we start playing everyone will start coming in and … Mike Z: And then, because they don’t know our songs, we’ll play a “cover,” or a part of a song. We don’t like covering songs necessarily, we have done it but it’s not our forte so to speak. Like we can do it, but we enjoy playing our own originals more. And when you do that it gets the crowd involved more because they know it, it’s on the radio. So they’re like, ‘Yes, I connect with this band.’ We can work together and make something sound great. And then we are all about making love after the show. All the time. (Laughs) What’s your favorite song to play live and which one gets the best reaction from the crowd? Emerson: I think we each have different ones. Mike L: I like the first song, getting right into it and seeing how people react. Mitch: One of our old ones. You’ll Count To Ten we had a video that Much Music played a few times, that one. It’s a piano intro… Mike L: Anything the crowd like, we like more. We’re just the dudes on stage. It’s one big music jam and we’re the guys on stage. And anyone who knows the words…it’s better for us! Emerson: I remember the first time that happened. The hype. Mike L: Yeah! Emerson: First show I ever experienced a fan sing our music back to us. I’m just drumming and I’m like, ‘Holy crap, they’re singing the words. This is insane!’ Mike L: That was our biggest local show. Mike Z: And we’re like, ‘I don’t even know the words!’ Emerson: I don’t!! (Laughs) Mike Z: This was my first show and I was terrified. Like, up to the day I was like, ‘Yeeeahhh!’ then when I got there, my hands were cold and shaky. I was like, ‘Oh I have to sing as well. I just learned how to sing all the songs, a week before the show.’ I joined the band twenty-six days before our first show. And we started singing, ‘I got twenty-six days to work with…’ Taking Back Sunday. We live our lives by band lyrics basically, (Jens note: What these guys don’t know, is that we do too!) Mike Z (cont'd): like, If you see the light, you know you have to go in that direction. Angels and Airwaves. (Laughs) Mike L: Every lyric is an inside joke to us. Mike Z: Limp Bizkit ‘Keep rollin, rollin.’ We never did that one. But it just happened to us. Yeah, our van rolled. Mike L: Yeah, we haven’t played a lot of shows in a while cause we went to Montreal to play Warped Tour. It was very last minute. So we went out there, played the show, come back and we rolled off the highway. Jens Note: At this time Emerson showed me a picture of their van after it rolled that he had on his cell phone…it was insane! Mike Z: The only reason the van wasn’t flat was because all of our gear was in there. Emerson: Yeah. That van was full of gear. And we are in the back sleeping on our gear and we just wake up to the van flipping. Mitch: The best way to describe it is, you know a nightmare…where some people are like ‘Oh I was falling, I was falling. But then I woke up and it was the end of my dream.’ We were sleeping and kind of woke up to the… Actual nightmare?! Mitch: Sliding off an amp and being like, ‘WHAT?!’ and then rolling. So yes, we did wake up to the nightmare! (Laughs) Emerson: I didn’t say a thing. We were dead silent just looking around, spinning in the van, quiet. Our merch guy screaming like, ‘Holy eff! Shit!!’ I just remember waking up and spinning and seeing my bros with me just (he didn’t say anything, but he started to spin!) Mike Z: We were basically a tumble dry series of a washing machine. Emerson: We should have been dead. If we landed upside down, we would have been dead. There’s no way we should have came out of that thing alive! I’m sorry, but no you shouldn’t have!! (Laughs) Mike L: It was funny cause we were like, if we get rear-ended one of us might die…and we flipped three times! Mike Z: And like, we’re not really strong into religion or karma or anything, but something… I think it was the music that kept us alive. I think we are all just so tough from touring. Emerson: That show was our biggest eye-opener. We lived what musicians live. We actually were a part of something and I think that that made us realize, Wow, this is what we actually wanna do. Mike Z: This is an exclusive right here!! Cause straight up, in two months…I don’t even know where we’ll be! (Laughs) Emerson: Brampton. Mike Z: That’s a bold statement. I’m just playing around. Our goal is like…like a lot of bands get asked ‘Oh did you ever think you’d be in this position?’ they’re all like ‘No, we just wanted to play music. We never thought we’d be here.’ Our goals have always been, I wanna be at the top of the food chain… Mike L: We wanna be like Blink living in four buses! (Laughs) Mike Z: Yeah! Like this is my career goal. We straight up, they (Mike Liorti and Emerson) finished high school. We (Himself and Mitch) almost finished high school but we got too excited! (Laughs) and we were just like, lets do this right now and if we fail, we fail! This is like class for us. This is Music 101! Mike L: Yeah, when we go in to watch All Time Low its recess. You know what though, this (interviewing and working on the site) is our dream! Mike Z: there is only one group of people we don’t like, and it’s the group of people who don’t love music for the right reasons. And the people who do this are the people who do it for the right reasons! Emerson: Yeah, look at you guys. Out in the cold in hoodies!! Mike Z: I wouldn’t do what you’re doing in your position, because it’s your dream. But because you asked me from my point of view, because I’m a member of the band I’m down. I don’t care how cold it is! If it was a blizzard I would still be doing the interview! Shameless self-promotion time. Tell everyone where they can access your music. Anything you think we should know about Rosedale, or want to say to the fans. Now is the time! Mike Z: ROSEDALE! Emerson: Hi everybody. Mike Z: www.mysapce.com/rosedalemusic, we are going to drop a new album, sometime oh-nine. For sure. Coming out, January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, sometime! Mitch: We will keep playing! Mike Z: We will!! And we will be following, whether or not we’re invited, Warped Tour 09. Few dates, whatever we can do. Follow up interview, we’re coming for you! Mike L: Facebook, I know you probably have eighty groups already, but look for Rosedale. Emerson: Thank you! Mike Z: We love you. Whoever you are. Thanks! Here at The Sound Faction we are some of the most random girls you will ever meet, so we like to end our interviews with five random questions. Are you up for it, or did you want to get inside? All: Yeah! If you were a scented candle, what would you smell like? Mike, Mike and Emerson: Mitch! Mitch: Like apple cinnoman. Or lavender. Lavender is good! What about you guys? (looking at the rest of the band) Mike Z: I think we (himself and Mike Liorti) would smell like pizza and construction site. (Laughs) Mike Z: No, I would be a candle with no scent. I would just be straight up wax! Mike L: I prefer incense. Mitch: Naw man, those things at The Body Shop…the little oils. Jens Note: These boys seem to know more about candles and the like than I do. Odd. Mike L: I don’t really know what flavors I like in scented candles. Mike Z: Well they aren’t flavors! (Laughs) Emerson: Personally I wanna be that scent that everyone knows and only knows that scent by knowing me. Mike Z: Dragon Fruit! Something exotic! Jens Note: His face was hysterical when he said that. I felt I should let you all know! Mike L: Emmo likes really underground colognes, like in that one movie. Oh I can’t think of the name of the movie, that sucks! Jens Note: He was thinking of Anchor Man, which he later remembered and interrupted the interview! Mike L: I’m gunna get it! Okay, Ninja Turtles or Power Rangers? I need to know this before I ask the next random question. Emerson: Ninja Turtles. Mike Z: Power Rangers! Mike L: Oh, it’s a tie! Okay, when I was two or three I went to Disney world, and I was chasing around a Ninja Turtle! Emerson: Keep in mind he is two or three…so he is like this (puts his hand about 5 feet in the air) big okay!! (Laughs) Mike Z and Emerson: He’s two, so he is this tall!! (Again putting their hands about 5 feet in the air!) Mike L: Yeah, so my parents were watching my brother. You know the parades? (Yes, I do!) Well the Ninja Turtles came by and so I was all ‘Ninja Turtles!’ and I started following them. So my parents called the security and shit and they found me chasing a chicken. (Laughs) Mike L: But then around four to seven I was watching Power Rangers. It was where I learned to get up earlier. Was it your Saturday morning cartoon? Mike L: No, it was my weekday morning cartoon!! That’s it, okay. What was your Saturday morning cartoon? Emerson: Mine was Rugrats. I’m not going to lie. Mike L: Rugrats was good! Mitch: Pokemon! Emerson: Pokemon was after school! Mike Z: Every morning I wouldn’t watch cartoons… I would pump iron. That’s all I did. Pump iron. No I watched Johnny Bravo. Mike L: I liked Doug. Do you remember Doug? Doug was awesome. (It really was!) Mike Z: I’m totally lying. I was into the lame stuff. Power Puff Girls and Dexters’ Lab. (We all agreed that Dexters’ Lab was awesome!) Mitch: Recess! (Recess also rocked!) Mike L: Raptors cause I’m basketball. (laughs) Mike Z: No, no, Brontosaurus. Mike L: Brontosaurus, okay. I don’t care! Mitch: I definitely like those ones that are like a bird. Lay an egg, then fly to the next cave. Mike L: Pterodactyls! Mitch: You can just sit in a cave, and be like, hey what’s goin’ on! Mike Z: They would have Pterodactyl eggs like as big as their face. That’s awesome! If you could be any old school rock god for a day, who would you be and how would you abuse the power? Mike L: Elvis. Mike Z: Who got the most girls? Mike L: Elvis. Or The Beatles. Mike Z: If we could go back in time and be The Beatles, just to pull that off. But I would be sad, because everyone would die. Mitch: Oh man. Kurt Cobain. I would do whatever the F*** I want all the time! But, but he doesn’t like, hurt other people in that. You know what I mean? He may have kinda hurt himself…I don’t agree with that. But Yeah. Mike Z: I would be Madonna! Mitch: Michael Jackson!! Mike Z: Madonna is a rock and roll princess! Like straight up! She might be a pop star, but she is rock and roll. I don’t even care. Emerson: I don’t even know who I’d be to be honest. Mike L: Buddy Rich yo! Emerson: Yeah, he’s actually an intense drummer. Mike L: Anchorman? … No wait, Anchorman?! Everyone: What?! Mike L: Is that the movie I’m thinking of? (Laughs!) Mike Z: I dunno! I don’t even remember how the thing with the movie came about! Mike L: Where he has a lot of colognes and he wants to find his own! Mike Z: Sex Panther! Mike L: Sex Panther, that’s in Anchorman right?! Why is that called Anchorman? Mike Z: Cause he’s the anchorman for a news show! Who would you want to win a date with? Mike Z: Katy Perry! KATY PERRY!! (Laughs) Mitch: Jessica Alba. Emerson: Stacy Keibler. Mike Z: I like Katy Perry cause she kissed a girl and she f***ing liked it!! Mitch: I really like, what’s her name? Alicia Cuthburt Mike L: Oh, the girl from Paramore…Hayley. At this point, Mike Zancai decided to start playing on a random pipe sticking out of the ground, he fell and it almost did some damage to his bathing suit area. We all laughed hysterically instead of asking if he was okay because well…that’s what friends are for!! We would like to thank the boys in Rosedale for taking some time to talk with us in the freezing cold! If you would like to check out Rosedale (which is highly recommended by me) then visit their MySpace
