What can I say about Frankie Mayfield and The Soundbox? The instruments are great! I was really into the first twenty-six seconds of the first track "Just Settle"... and then the vocals came in. I really really tried to like it, I really really tried to even tolerate it, but I just couldn't. The vocals are not good, and they drag the entire thing down. I thought perhaps it was just the one song, but as I listened through all eleven tracks, it didn't get any better for me.
It just seemed like a high-school band with great musicians, but a singer that just tries way too hard to be a little edgy and a little out there. But instead of edgy and out there, it just comes across as... well, for lack of a better term: it just comes across as bad. It's like that guy you had third period history class with who recorded an EP in his room with his macbook pro and was convinced that it was amazing and wonderful, and you can't help but be charmed by his pluck and heart, but completely underwhelmed by the actual songs.
I'm sure that there are people out there who dig this kind of sound, but that person isn't me. But you'll never know if you'll dig it until you check it out for yourself, so look up Frankie Mayfield and the Soundbox and formulate your own opinions!
