The Sound Faction vs. Quietdrive
Coming to us from Minneapolis, Minnesota comes the five piece pop-punk band Quietdrive. Manda, Caity and Doctah J first found Quietdrive at The Get Happy Tour of 07 with Bowling For Soup, Quietdrive, Army of Freshmen and Meele. We were immediately enthralled with the band's performance and captivating music and were pumped when we got the opportunity to talk to Guitarist Matt Kirby about the new album, Cyndi Lauper and gutteral groaning... well, we never said we wouldn't catch the embarassing and awkward moments... you heard it first on Sound Faction! Roll call! Who are you, and what do you do for the band? Matt Kirby - Guitar and Vocals
For people who have never seen you play, how would you describe your live show? We try to focus on a very high energy show. But at the same time we try to keep our music as diverse as possible. We want moms to enjoy a Quietdrive show show just as much as their teenagers. So we aim to spice it up from all angles....anthems, ballads, guitar heavy rock, acoustic driven, violin featured, etc. We hear you're currently in the process of recording a new album, how's it going? It is completed! And we are very happy with it. It feels amazing to finally have it done What kinds of new sounds can we expect to hear from you? There are a lot of new sounds to it. We specifically used a lot of strings, keyboards, and synth this time around from a sounds standpoint. We wrote a big variety of songs. It is definitely a roller coaster of an album Could we expect to hear anymore bad ass 80's cover songs (And would you ever want to sing "Time After Time" with Cyndi Lauper)? No more cover songs this time around! Of course we would want to sing with Cyndi. She's amazing. We heard that she liked our rendition, so if anyone knows her, let her know that we're interested. What are your major influences when writing your music, and what's the one influence that people are surprised to hear? Influences change every day, so thats a tough question to answer. I would say that the bands we grew up on in the 90s were a big influence for sure What's been your best moment as a band so far? I think getting to see the country the way we did. We were gone for like 300+ days a year for 2 years. It was truly the planes, trains, and automobiles story. That was an experience that is tough to describe Do you have any funny little quirks that you're cool with sharing? Special talents or anything like that? Despite his gangly, unathletic looking frame, Kevin can hurl a football like 40-50 yards What has been your most memorable performance? Is there any venue you've always wanted to play but haven't gotten the chance to yet? Our most memorable performance was definitely playing 1st Avenue in Minneapolis the first time. It sold out like 3 weeks in advance. It was breathtaking. I will never forget that day. What's your favourite thing about your fans? And do you have any quirky fan stories? Our fans are die hards. There are 3 sisters from WI, that have been to almost 60 shows. They are the greatest Do you have any pre or post show rituals? This I can't explain. But I will try. We get in a circle, and we make this horrible sound...like uuugghhhh.....and wave our hands around. Its embarrassing and rediculous, but we WILL NOT PLAY WELL if we don't do it. Its just one of those things. The Sound Faction is make up of five girls (...and Ed) who are random at best, love to laugh and make others laugh. We try to ask all of our interviewees five random questions at the end. Who would you want to win a date with? Charlize Theron What is your biggest guilty pleasure? Michael Buble Leg warmers? Functional accessory or bad fad? Sexiest thing since Zubaz If you could be any old school rock god for a day, who would you be and how would you abuse the power? Frank Sinatra.....I wouldn't have been so shy about being in the mafia. I would literally own Las Vegas...and drink scotch all day Which is worse: Cheeto fingers, or juice mustaches? Any mustache is a good mustache.....so cheeto fingers Thanks so much to Matt Kirby of Quietdrive for talking with us! Be sure to check out the band's Website or MySpace, and Email us to let us know what you think!
