Why I'm PROUD to be a My Chemical Romance Fan

Why I'm Proud to be a My Chemical Romance Fan Every last one of the girls on the staff of this website is a fan of My Chemical Romance. Manda, Linzy, Jen, Natty, Doctah J and myself. We are proud to call ourselves fans, no matter what. We've all taken flack here and there for it, some of us have been beaten up for it, occasionally we get emails telling us to go to hell because of it, and we brush it off and keep on smiling and rocking out. There is a pride that comes with being a fan of a band like MCR, a band like no other I've ever seen, and it enables the six of us, and millions of people around the world, to hold our heads up high and stand in the face of the people who try to cut us down because of our tastes in music.

Half an hour ago, the website singitforjapan.com went live. In the aftermath of the horrific tragedy in Japan recently, My Chemical Romance stepped up to the plate and decided to make a difference. Thousands of fans across the globe sent in messages of hope and love, an outpouring of strangers caring for each other flooded the internet, and went into the project SING It For Japan, a remake of My Chemical Romance's single "Sing" from the record Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. The track is available for purchase on singitforjapan.com and the proceeds go to the Red Cross, to aid in relief efforts.

I watched this video and was instantly brought to tears.

I started writing this article two weeks ago, before the Sing It For Japan video had come out, and now that I'm finishing it up, I wanted that message of hope to come first, but allow me, if you will, to move on to the reason that I started this article in the first place.

I've been a fan of My Chemical Romance from the get-go. I was instantly taken not only by the music, but by the people behind it. From the start there was an message of hope that was pouring out of the band members, a desperate need to make sure that everyone who ever heard their music knew that it was okay to be a little bit fucked up, and to know that they're not alone. Whether it was in song lyrics, interview quotes, or the mini-rants from band members on stage, My Chemical Romance has done everything that they can to make sure their fans hold their heads up high, take pride in who they are and realize that they are worth keeping alive. Every last one of them.

Through the years, I've watched My Chemical Romance slam face-first into adversity and handle everything that came their way with utmost class and respect, becoming sincere role models for every single fan, no matter what age they may be. They've been accused of being a suicide-cult, they've been blamed for multiple unfortunate events such as the tragic suicides of several teenagers, they've faced nay-sayers, people who have tried their hardest to bring them down and stomp them out, and while most bands I know of would eventually fly off the handle and fight hate with hate, I have never once seen My Chemical Romance handle these situations with anything but class.

One of my favorite quotes from the band came from singer Gerard Way, in reference to a British rag-magazine calling MCR a "suicide cult".

It just so happens that it was another video that sparked my desire to finally put my thoughts into words in this article. I've had the intense pleasure to talk to many My Chemical Romance fans throughout the years, and every single one I've had has been so awesome to talk to. When I saw this video on youtube, I couldn't help the prideful smile on my face the entire time, it encapsulated all the things I've felt for so many years. The MCR fan who made this video is named RosaLui and this is one of the most inspiring and well-made fan videos that I've ever seen. Here, check it out!

Having been so moved by Rosa's video, I immediately messaged her and asked her if I could use her video in this article, and she agreed to let me use it (Thank you again, Rosa!). I then followed up with her to ask her two questions, one question was about her inspiration to made this video, to which she replied;

"I wanted to encapsulate what the band meant to me, and why so many people find them inspirational. With words alone, it's hard thing to explain - because they are every song they've ever written, speech they've ever given, performance they've ever done. I felt that a video was the only way to capture it all."

I watched the video about fifteen times in a row, and was more and more inspired by it every time. My Chemical Romance is a band that instills pride in their fans, because we ARE an army. We are an army of fans who take care of each other, support each other, and care deeply about each other and the people who have brought us together. I asked Rosa what My Chemical Romance means to her, and how they had affected her, and what she sent back to me was exactly how I felt but hadn't been able to express in words. So I will leave you with these words from RosaLui, and a hope that all of you MCR fans out there take pride in who you are, and what the MCRmy represents.
