Natty vs. Pinkleef

Twitter is becoming, at least for me, an amazing way to get my hands on some new and interesting music and that is exactly how I heard about Pinkleef. I have to admit for their age these boys have some talented, and I was excited to see what their thoughts were about music, recording and the music scene in general.

Sit back and take a second to read about an amazing band from Missouri tell you about who they would want to date and if in fact what they would smell like if they were a scented candle.

"Most of songs start as joke songs, but then we realized that the music is too good to waste on a joke song"
- Adam: Pinkleef

For our readers that don't know, can you tell us who you are and what you do for the band?

Adam: Hey this is Adam, I play guitar and sing for Pinkleef.

Henry: I'm Henry and I play lead guitar. Ian plays bass and sings, and Colman plays the drums

Adam: Yeah, and we all contribute to the songwriting

Can you tell us how Pinkleef came about? And what inspired the name?

Adam: Ha-ha actually the story is pretty lame. Me and Ian met at a school function and hit it off. He later we hooked up with Colman. We set up a MySpace and got a show, but we didn't have a guitarist, so Ian called up Henry who was his friend, and that’s how we got our line

Henry: Yeah, originally I was supposed to be a fill-in for one show, but I just kicked too much ass to leave. About our band name, Ian wanted the word "pink" in the name, so we went to bandnamegenerator.com and typed in Pink, and what do ya know, up comes Pink Leaf, which we changed to Pinkleef. Because we can.

[Side note: ‘because we can’ made me LOL really loud. I mean come on, look at our website catch phrase]

Is there a specific message you want to get across with your band?

Henry: I personally don't have a message; I guess I'm just not deep enough.

Adam: Well I really try to convey the fact that kids can rock too in my music

You guys from Missouri, how do you feel about the music scene there? And how does it treat you guys?

Henry: Crazily great! There aren’t that many good bands, which means there are a lot of opportunities for good bands. Not that we are a good band. Also, most of the good bands are really talented; all the bands we’ve played with have been great and really easy to work with.

What inspires you guys to create music and where do you get the inspiration for your lyrics?

Henry: I create music because its a stress reliever, and cuz its fuckin blast.

Adam: Well most of my songs hold a lot of meaning to me, but what's funny is that almost all of my lyrics are free styled. Also, most of songs start as joke songs, but then we realized that the music is too good to waste on a joke song, so we try to write some meaningful lyrics. And fail.

Is there any specific lyric, to any of your songs, that means the most to you? Or any specific song for that matter that means the most?

Henry: Blinking in the Dark, because we've been laughed at by some people that don't think we can make real music, cuz were 15.

Adam: Washed Away is pretty meaningful to me, because it's about addiction, and a couple of my family members have really struggled with that.

Are there any bands out there that inspire you?

Adam: Blink 182, Ludo, Bullet for my Valentine, Jimmy Eat World, Phantom Planet, NeverShoutNever!, and Weezer have been really big influences for me.

Henry: Blink 182 is a crazy influential band for me the dynamics and songwriting are amazing. I have also recently become obsessed with Story of the Year because of their awesome songwriting and live shows. Mostly, the bands I listen to sound nothing like us, like Slipknot and The Devil Wears Prada, but their influences are still present in our music.

Now, on your MySpace you have a message stating that you are just trying to have fun the only way you know how, has music and making music always been a passion for you?

Adam: Well I started playing the violin at the age of 2, and have played many instruments since, so yes, music has always been a huge part of my life. Also, whenever I'm any emotion, expressing through music is the best way I know how.

Henry: I've been in a band since I was 10 and it always been a big part of my life. I just can't imagine myself not playing guitar.

I noticed on Twitter (which is an amazing way to keep people informed) that you guys are in the process of singing on a contract, how did that come about and how does it feel being signed?

Henry: Well, I would equate it to getting touched on the nuts by Jesus himself. It's a really awesome and great opportunity for us. So here is how it happened: we were in a local music store called Vintage Vinyl, and we saw a flyer for I-44 records. Adam called them, they check out our shit, and they thought we were awesome.

Adam: Yeah it will be really great recording in the same studio that Crooked X, a band signed to a major label, records some of their songs in. The quality will be great.

You guys also mentioned going into the studio, what can we expect to hear from you guys, in terms of new music?

Adam: It took a little while to get the ball rolling, but we should be heading out to Tulsa, Oklahoma to record our 6 song EP for an entire week of the upcoming spring break.

Henry: There's going to be 2 brand new never-before-heard songs, and 4 re-makes of some of our best previous songs, but now in professional quality.

With a new year just behind us, what are you looking forward to accomplish with Pinkleef?

Henry: We hope to tour this summer, and to get a larger fan base. We're trying to get on warped tour but if we don't, we'll just do our own tour.

Adam: Yeah, after the release of our EP, we will hopefully gain some popularity. I'm looking forward to touring a lot, and hopefully even signing with a bigger label.

Now us here at The Sound Faction are probably five of the most random people you will ever meet. With each interview we do, we end it with five of the most random questions you've ever been asked. Are you up for that?

Adam and Henry: HELL YESS!!!

If there was a fight between Batman, Superman and Spiderman who would win?

Henry: Spiderman's the coolest, but Superman would win.

Adam: Yeah, I love Spidey, but Superman's powers are f*cking cheap.

If you were a scented candle, what would you smell like?

Adam: YOUR MOM!

Henry: Sweatysex.

If you could be the champion of anything in the world, what would it be?

Henry: I would be the winner of the most incredibly sexy guitar solo ever.

Adam: Didn't you already do that?

Henry: Yeah but it wasn't officially documented, so it didn't count

Adam: Wow that sucks monkey nuts. I would probably be the champ of Rockem Sockem Robots, cuz it's pretty awesome. Also, my cousin always beats me, which pisses me off.

Who would you wanna win a date with?

Adam: That chick that plays Elliot in Scrubs is pretty damn fly.

Henry: One of the Olsen Twin. How about both at once?

Which snack food would you completely gorge on?

Henry: SUPER PRETZELS!!! Those things are fucking amazing.

Adam: Dude, I'm obsessed with Peanut M+M's and I love me some Red Hot Riplets, best chip in the UNIVERSE!!!

And here's your shameless self-promo spot: anything you'd like to add about yourselves, the music, or anything else?

Adam and Henry: THANKS SOUND FACTION, WE LOVE YOU!!!

Thank you Adam and Henry for taking the time to answer our questions! And we love you too! For more information on Pinkleef you can visit their MySpace.
