Caity vs. Of Divinity and Humanity
Coming to us, hot out of New Jersey are fifteen year old rockers: Of Divinity and Humanity, a hardcore band rocking the local scene one heavy riff at a time! We got the chance to talk with the members of the band about breaking into the local New Jersey scene, thrilling band moments, and sea turtle orphanages... well, you never can tell now a days, and you heard it first on Sound Faction! Roll call... who are you, where are you from and what do you play/do for the band? Hey, I'm Taylor Kvist and I play lead guitar. With me is Mike Tredici who plays rhythm guitar, David Stoneback who plays drums, Paul Rusk who plays bass guitar, and our vocalist Sean whos unfortunately not with us but is over the phone. We're all from Colonia, New Jersey.
You have a predominantly hardcore sound, what's the hometown scene for hardcore like where you are? Theres not many hardcore bands around us, its mostly alternative, so in the beginning we were kind of different. With our new ep Breaking the C-note, a lot more people have been catching onto us. Being such a young band, do you find the scene to be particularly welcoming, or hard to crack? There really is no difference we can tell between us and older bands, the only real problem we have is driving to venues because none of us have our licenses yet. What is Of Divinity and Humanity all about? What spawns the music for you? We're just a bunch of friends who love music and wanted to make some of our own for other people to enjoy. Many things reflect our music. It can be an event that happened recently in our lives or something just as simple as messing around acoustically and accidentally finding a cool riff to base a song off. What are your major influences when writing your songs? Probably just the mood were in at the moment is the main influence. What brought the band together as a group? What really brought us together and made us focus and become a serious band was probably the Break for Bamboozle contest. It really brought us together as a whole musically and as friends. What's been your best moment as a band so far? The best moment we've ever had was when we played the Mainstage venue a week or so ago we had our first pit form. It was really just a great experience and it was just a lot of fun seeing people having fun and enjoying our music. Describe your live show for those who have never seen you play: Energetic, entertaining, overall just a fun time. We like to mess around a lot and have a good time. You have two EP's out: "Breaking the C-Note" and "Pears are Dangerous" what was the recording process like for them? Fun as hell. Pat at Frozenn Productions is a funny dude. We <3 him. What should we expect to see in the future of ODAH? More shows, more songs, expanding more on our sound instrumentally and technically, and a quest through the heart of The Amazon... maybe. The Sound Faction is make up of five girls who are random at best, love to laugh and make others laugh. We try to ask all of our interviewees five random questions at the end. Here goes. If you could have any non-standard (re: flying, x-ray vision... comic book stuff) superpower, what would it be? Sean wants to turn people into spaghetti, Dave wants the power to seduce men into being gay for him, Paul wants to taste like candy (a treat for the ladies he says), Mike wants to turn into a tree at any moment he wishes, and I would like to be able to regrow limbs and lose limbs at my command. What is your least favourite vegetable that isn't green? Cauliflower, definitely. If you were a flavour of Potato Crisp, what kind would you be? Mike wants to be jelly, Sean wants to be BBQ, Daves wants to be Hot N' Spicy, Paul wants to be Sweet N' Spicy, I want to be salt and vinegar.
If you could be the champion of anything, what would it be? (If you say "the world" we all start laughing hysterically, just so you know.) Sean wants to be the champion of midget throwing, Dave wants to be the champion of salt water shark battling, I want to be the champion of a buffalo wing cookoff, Paul wants to be the champion of Salsa dancing, Mike wants to be the champion of the snacking industry.
If you could be any old-school rock god for a day, how would you abuse the power? Dave would smoke bud all day, Sean would fight hobos, I would want to have the world's biggest party, Paul wants to grow a massive garden, Mike wants to start an orphanage for sea turtles
Thanks again to Of Divinity and Humanity for talking with us! Be sure to check out the band's MySpace and let us know what you think!!
