I've gotten the question "why don't you advertise on your website?" or "Could my business advertise on The Sound Faction?" several times before, and each and every time I tell them the same thing. The Sound Faction does not use advertising on our webpage because we are an independent webzine, and we want to keep it that way! We don't use advertisers for the sole reason that no advertisers means no strings. We are able to write what we want, when we want, about whatever we want because we don't have to worry about offending advertisers.

For example: say Target wanted to place an advertisement on our website. Great! We got the banner on the page, and our readers are seeing the ad... but ut-oh! On the review page, there's a review of a record that Target sells in their media department that is... shall we say less than sugar-sweet. Target could very well see that as a problem and pull their advertisement. By not dealing with advertisers, it allows us the freedom to express our ACTUAL opinions on things, rather than the opinions that we think would appease our advertisers.

That's why I love independent media outlets (blogs, zines, etc). We have the freedom to do what we want with our little slice of the internet. Sure a little extra pocket money for all of us would be fantastic, but not if it's going to compromise what we started this website for, to promote music of all kinds, and to give you readers our honest-to-gosh opinions, even if they're sometimes not so nice.
