The MySpace Graveyard

A sad movement is sweeping MySpace in the recent months, what started as a Mecca and Mixing Bowl of music from all over the world has been dwindling down sadly as more and more bands put up the dreaded R.I.P. I was hit pretty hard with it recently when overnight it seemed that five or six of my favourite MySpace Mainstays had called it quits and tossed in the proverbial towel. Thankfully most of these bands leave their MySpace page active, leave the music up to listen to, but it won't fill the hole in our Event Schedules or TagBoard... So today, I'm going to honour some of my favourite MySpace bands that have sadly put up that ol' R.I.P... get in on it while you can, there's a lot of good stuff out there that's going under.

#10: From Man In Ghost

RIP: 2008
Link: www.myspace.com/frommaninghost
MySpace Genre: Rock/Pop/Indie
From: St. Catherines, Ontario

Why I'll Miss Them: I found out about From Man In Ghost when The Sound Faction was invited to cover the Teeter Release Party in Toronto, this band opened for them and we were instantly blown away at the high energy, beautiful lyrics and vocals, driving beats and just how much fun they were! They proved to be even more fun (and funny) when we snatched 'em away for an interview that night. (you can see the interview Here)

#9: Amidine

RIP: 2008
Link: www.myspace.com/amidine
MySpace genre: Emo/Pop Punk/Rock
From: "Middleburg" United States

Why I'll Miss Them: Amidine was definitely one of my MySpace mainstays, I was rooting for them for quite a while, they've got great instrumentation, great lyrics, fun melodies, a great vocalist, the stage presence... it was a real bummer the day I saw the RIP go up, a bit of a suckerpunch.

#8: Sounds Like Chicken

RIP: 2007
Link: www.myspace.com/soundslikechicken
MySpace Genre: Ska/Reggae/Rock
From: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Why I'll Miss Them: It's no secret that I'm a ska fan up down and sideways. Sounds Like Chicken was a great thirdwave Ska band, they had a crazy high-energy show and were just fun! If you like Ska Music, then Sounds Like Chicken is worth checking out, they have their music available for free downloads through Jamendo, so download their albums and get in on it.

Take A Bullet to the Grave (Single)
Global Domination (Single)
Like A Cannonball to the Ocean Floor
I am Gibbon, Hear Me Roar

#7: Odja

RIP: 2008
Link: www.myspace.com/odja
MySpace Genre: Rock/Metal/Experimental
From: Paris, France

Why I'll Miss Them: Oh come on... a rad band singing in French? What's not to miss?? All right, they definitely had more going for them than just the French part (it was pretty rad though). They had great vocals, I don't know French, so I don't know about the lyrics, but the instruments were great, and their heart was definitely in it. I may not have understood what they were saying, but music is universal, and it sure as heck sounded good..

#6: Quatermain

RIP: 2008
Link: www.myspace.com/quatermain
MySpace Genre: Ska/Punk/Rock
From: United Kingdom

Why I'll Miss Them: Once again, I'm not kidding... I'm a total ska fan.. you lay some ska on me, and I will stalk your band to the ends and back. Not STALK but- okay, yeah, I'll stalk you. MUSICALLY stalk you, of course... (have no fear, Suburban Legends... I don't actually know where you live... yet.) Quatermain was another Ska band that I found on MySpace and got really into, I never got the chance to see them live, but I really super loved the music that they had on the page and listened to it all the time. I really wish that I had gotten the chance to see them play, but alas... so goes the world of MySpace RIP.

#5: Render The Voiceless

RIP: 2008
Link: www.myspace.com/renderthevoiceless
MySpace Genre: Rock/Rock/Rock
From: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Why I'll Miss Them: This was a band that a friend of mine from Milwaukee got me into, he had gone to a rival high-school, but knew of the band and went to many shows when he was home in Wisconsin. He passed the myspace link off to me and got me hooked, unfortunately it was about six months later that Render The Voiceless tossed up that dreaded RIP, and I never got to see them play, which is a bummer.

#4: The Divide

RIP: I don't know
Link: www.myspace.com/thexdivide
MySpace Genre: Punk/Ska/Rock
From: Sacramento, California

Why I 'll Miss Them: The Divide took influences from Punk Rock classics like Black Flag, The Adicts, Subhumans... etc... and combined them with new elements of Rock and Ska to make this driving, addicting beat that I can't stay away from! Unfortunately for me, when I discovered The Divide, they had already broken up, so I'm with you on this one as I missed the boat too. It's a damned shame, but I still hit up their myspace and listen to the tracks they left up.

#3: Kinsey

RIP: 2008
Link: www.myspace.com/kinsey
MySpace Genre: Rock
From: Louisville, Kentucky

Why I'll Miss Them: On a boring weekend one day last year, a few friends and I piled into a rental car and picked a paper out of a hat that had written on them, Illinois' surrounding states: Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and Iowa, the state that was picked was Kentucky, and so began our roadtrip to Louisville, for no other reason than boredom. When we got there we hung out, talked to some locals about what was there to do, and they pointed us in the direction of a local show going down at a little club, so we hit it up. Kinsey was one of the bands that played, and I'll never forget that show, it was so much fun, such a spur-of-the-moment thing, and I just had an amazing time with my friends. Kinsey stuck in my mind as being the best band that played that night, so I MySpaced them when we returned to Chicago, and fell even more in love with the band. They've been on my MySpace rotation ever since.

#2: Jacks Wasted Life

RIP: 2007
Link: www.myspace.com/jackswastedlifeuk
MySpace Genre: Pop Punk/Powerpop/Ska
From: Birmingham, UK

Why I'll Miss Them: Jacks Wasted Life was another just solely FUN band. A bunch of rad kids who just wanted to have fun, play music and make people smile. The music was fun to rock out to, something to listen to with the windows down while you cruise in the summer (as my friends and I often did).

#1: Battleska Galactica

RIP: 2008
Link: www.myspace.com/battleskagalactica
MySpace Genre: Ska/Punk
From: Folkestone, London and South East, UK

Why I'll Miss Them: BSG had hilarious lyrics, they really cracked me right up, and combined it with rad melodies, tight brass, and slamming instrumentation, and you've got the makings of a good band! They had great attitudes about it as well, unpretentious and just fun guys, it's really a shame that Battleska Galactica is no more.

Although many bands have parted ways and put up their farewells and RIP's, new bands continue to spring up every day, thus is the circle of... well.. MySpace. So honour the memories of those past, be true to those current, and keep one eye to the horizon for those yet to come.
