Caity vs. My Future Lies

You know the drill by now, I cruise MySpace, find a band that I totally dig, and do whatever I can to talk to them so that I can bring them to you readers. Today's adventure is no different, so I bring you as an offering: My Future Lies, from Castle Hill Australia. Enjoy!

"Simple. I write simple songs. I'm no poet."
- Lukey Lukess: My Future Lies

For our readers who don't know who you are, could you please introduce yourself and what you do for the band?

My name is Lukey Lukess, i'm the singer, guitarist and manager of the band My Future Lies. We're a growing independent band in Australia and we've kicked a lot of goals without a record label proving the unsigned scene is alive and well.

You were formerly known as Acid Eyeliner, what encouraged the switch to My Future Lies, and where did the new name come from? How did the band itself form?

We formed as Acid Eyeliner in the summer of 2006. We played under that name for a couple of years but as we grew into something bigger and gathered a large following of fans, especially under 18 kids, we realised that Acid ( intended as the chemical ) was not the most appropriate name for a band to carry.

You're based out of Australia. How is the local scene there? Did you find it particularly hard to crack into?

Australia is very hard due to the relatively small population compared to our big brothers America and Europe. Our top 40 charts is much smaller than the USA Christian charts for example. We've worked really hard with reward coming from online fans with websites such as Myspace and Facebook. That said, we've not had any support from the local Australian record labels or agencies. We don't let that slow us down though.

What inspires your lyrics? Is there one specific lyric that means the most to you?

I guess I write about life and love. Using lyrics and songs as a release has been really amazing for me. Lots of my lyrics are obviously special to me for different reasons and to pick out one as a stand out would be way too hard.

"Three nights I feel what is the same the little things that make my night feel colder three empty spaces in my tooth brush holder you know I'm saving one of those for you"

Simple. I write simple songs. I'm no poet.

What kind of message are you trying to get out with the band?

You know that is something that changes all the time. We try and support kids that are depressed and feel alone. I don't necessarily write songs that are too direct, but we've realised that some songs in particular have helped kids out. We also encourage people to live their lives chasing their dreams.

For those readers who haven't seen you play live, can you describe your live show? What gets the best reaction from the crowd?

We're really energetic. As a three piece you have to be. The drum solo is always a highlight and i love playing my guitar behind my head. Look out for those little things.

What has been the biggest moment for the band? What has been the biggest challenge?

The biggest moment was supporting the Veronica's and the Living end at different shows. That and playing live on MTV a couple of times. You really learn how to control your nerves in those situations. Our biggest challenge i guess was rebuilding ourselves after losing a lot of money in 2008 when a charity tour cost a fortune and we were mislead into extra expenses. We're much better of now.

For the kids out there with bands of their own who are trying to crack into the industry, do you have any advice or words for them?

Work hard. Be involved with your fans. Talk to them on myspace and repay them with thanks at shows and trust your own judgements. It's a tough industry. I believe any dream is possible, you have to want it enough and work hard enough to achieve it.

The music industry is a rough one to be in, What fuels your passion to keep going?

I guess it is all i know. I love playing music live and seeing the way songs i've created effect different people. That is something that drives me to wake up and chase this constant dream. Being in a band is not about band practice or gigs, it is about chasing what you're passionate about from the moment you wake up till the moment you sleep.

So what can My Future Lies fans look forward to in the future?

A 2nd album!! I'm currently writing new songs and we're going to be showcasing them very soon. This is really exciting. How many unsigned bands can get 2 albums out within 2 years!

Here at the Sound Faction we are five of the most random people you will ever meet, so we like to end our interviews on a less serious note with five random questions. Are you up for that?

Of course!!

If you could pass a law for the world, what would it be?

To get rid of all the blow sniffers (managers / record labels) that constantly screw our industry chasing MONEY instead of the artists dreams. Pretty serious yeh?

Which is worse, cheeto fingers or juice mustaches?

My imagination is running wild here... The juice mustache on a pretty girl can be kinda sexy.

What girls fashion trend confuses you most?

Girls that wear high heals, only to carry them home. I think if you can't wear them all night, don't wear them at all.

[Caity's Note: We dare you to try it, boys... we dare you...]

Who would you want to win a date with?

Any girl that rides motoX.

Who smells the worst in the band, and how often to you feel the need to spray them down with Febreze?

Our drummer is a smoker so he can take the blame for smelling the worst! Hopefully he'll quit that soon.

And here's your shameless self-promo spot: anything you'd like to add about yourselves, the music, or anything else?

We'd love new people to listen to our songs, find out meanings for themselves and hopefully follow our journey. We're planning to stick this out for many many years yet, so lets hope for some big supprises.

Thank you so much to Lukey for taking time out to talk to us, if you're interested in hearing samples of music from My Future Lies, check out the band on their MySpace Page!
