BAND OF THE MONTH: MARIANAS TRENCH

Alright, alright! Woo! Time for another band of the month (did July seem really long to anyone else out there?), and I'm glad to announce that this month, I've managed to steal the month and claim it for... Marianas Trench!

For our non-Canadian readers, you may not know the Vancouver, BC rockers, but if you're anywhere in Canada and haven't been living under a rock for the last year and a half, you know these boys. You at least have to know their song that hit number 1 on our Canadian charts here, "Shake Tramp". It's fun, it's catchy, and the video involves front man Josh Ramsay dancing around like a fool. What could be better?

Now I've been a fan of Marianas Trench for... oh, quite awhile. I accidentally caught their first video "Say Anything" on MuchLoud one day and thought it was awesome. I went, found the song, and downloaded it (I'm sorry, guys! I bought the album after I realized everything was good!), and proceeded to whore it out to every person I knew. Now with some of them it stuck, but the second I saw the "Shake Tramp" video, in particular, the part of it where Mr. Ramsay does this little wiggle on the ground... (You know what? I'll just link you to the video: Click Here)

Well, anyway, I sent out the link to the video around and I know it at least caught on with Caity, because the next thing I knew she was telling me about little videos they had on YouTube and let's just say it made me love the boys that much more. They're goobers.

Their music in general tends to be a bit of a genre-jumper, but that's part of why I love them. I'm very eclectic when it comes to my music, so being able to put on Fix Me and going from listening to something that's got a bit of screaming in it, that's a little on the heavier side, to something that sounds distinctly like that Beach Boys makes my effin day, really.

I got the chance to see them live at the Opera House here in Toronto in October/07, and to be honest, I was floored. They broke into a four part harmony, a Capella, and covered Billy Joel's "And So It Goes". The only thing that wrecked it a bit for me were the girls who took the quieter atmosphere as a chance to yell "JOSH YOU'RE HOT!"... that was a bit of mood killer, but it was still amazing.

Their debut album, Fix Me, was released in October 2006 on 604 records, and the group are currently in the studio working on their sophomore CD. According to our American's around here, Fix Me wasn't released internationally, but trust me, if you ever come across it, or stumble across the boys on iTunes, do yourself a favour and look into them. You won't be disappointed at all.

When Manda first introduced me to Marianas Trench, it was through (of course) the Shake Tramp video, I believe her words were something along the lines of "oh my god, watch this NOW or I will cut you." Perhaps without the threats... but it was linked to me with enthusiasm. I watched the video and was mildly confused with the homage to Queen at the beginning, but they had good harmonies, and after a few seconds, the Queen homage started to make me giggle, which turned into stunned silence and amused smirks at the lyrics and over dramatic dancing. It was amazing, I was hooked!

From there a quick Youtube search brought up a few more videos, and I loved every single one of them, but the "omg I love this band" came with this video), a cell-phone video of the band singing "And So It Goes" live, my all-time favourite Billy Joel song... sa-WOON. There's no better way to win me over than to demonstrate that you have real talent, and can sing like this... stick me with a fork, I'm done!

One lazy summer day, I was just lounging online when Caity IMed with the link to the Mariana's Trench video for "Shake Tramp" on YouTube. Immediately, I fell in love with the band, and their geeky antics (seriously, when a front man allows himself to be seen as a slime ball and being slapped around for it, you know the band doesn't take themselves too seriously.) The only song I have heard is "shake tramp," and I love it. It is a catchy song that is great to loudly sing while driving. Track down Mariana's Trench (their debut label CD is not available in the States sadly.) You will not be disappointed.

I actually heard about Marians Trench through my cousin, who had the famous line from "Shake Tramp" in her MSN name. I looked up the lyrics and found out the song and the second I heard it I loved it! That was pretty much how all their songs went. As soon as I heard them, I loved them!! Marianas Trench is another band that I am happy to have on my iPod. They are wicked fun and i hope to one day see them live! MTftw!

The first time I heard about MT was from our very own Manda. Before that I didn't really know who they were. However, I started slowly listening to them and had a few songs on my iPod. But to be honest I didn't really have the time when she first introduced me to spend learning something new. It wasn't too long ago that I found a folder on my computer with a whole bunch of their songs. I decided 'lets just put this on my iPod', I figured all my time commuting could be put to good use. And I have to say I'm glad I did put them on. I have a great mix on my iPod, and MT fits in perfectly. I started to do my research, like I do with any new band I listen to.

I was sorta surprised to find out that they were based out of Canada, not that we don't produce some good music, however it did surprise me. I would have that "Feeling Small" is the one I often put on repeat.
