Jen vs. My Favourite Highway
It’s time for that interview with My Favorite Highway I promised everyone in my article! You know you’re excited! Well I was. I came across My Favorite Highway on Pure Volume and instantly loved what I heard. It honestly upset me a little that I hadn’t heard of these guys before. I was actually on their myspace getting the URL for my article, and I saw that they were online. This was at 4am by the way. So I was like, well I could just try…so I emailed Dave and seriously, two minutes later I got a reply saying he was up for an interview! I was really excited because from the time I found them, to the time I contacted Dave, I couldn’t stop listening to them. The first song I heard was ‘Getaway Car,’ and I can’t stop listening to it. The chorus is insanity. But in the best way, which is in no way insane! It is just intense. “You’ve got a buck forty-five left to keep you alive.” For our readers who don’t know who you are, could you please introduce yourself and what you do foe the band? My name is Dave Cook and I sing, play piano, and guitar in My Favorite Highway How did My Favorite Highway come to be and where did the name come from? My cousin, Will, and I formed the band four years ago after I decided to take a break from college... I never went back. Will and I came up with the name while sitting in the horrible rush hour traffic of Northern Virginia after one of us made the sarcastic remark "this is my favorite highway". The name is entirely arbitrary. Congratulations on recently signing with Virgin Records! What was the first thing that went through your minds? Thank you! Well, we had been talking with Virgin for over two years, and I guess it can all be attributed to hard work and perfect timing, its very exciting. I think that many people perceive signing a record deal as a super euphoric experience... which it is, but it's a very long process, it can sometimes take months to negotiate a deal. We were given the record deal in September and didn't sign till almost the end of November, so by the time we were in the offices signing the papers I think we were all pretty anxious and very much stuck in the mind set of..."It's about time!" You released your first full length in July, how have fans, old and new responded to it? There's has been an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the new record from everyone. I was reading your blog on your Myspace and I came across your thoughts on How To Call A Bluff and the songs on it. I honestly had a little laugh at how frustrating it was when writing Getaway Car, simply because that has to be my favorite song on the album. How do you feel now, looking back, about all the frustration you faced while recording? Do you feel like maybe if you weren’t that frustrated, that if you didn’t have that determination, you wouldn’t feel the way you do about the album? I'm glad it's your favorite, that's also Will's and my favorite song! No, I definitely think that I was that frustrated, in fact, I was ridiculously frustrated, I hated that song until I didn't hate it anymore. Writing songs is an amazing experience and it's very much a love-hate kind of thing. I personally hate writing lyrics, a lot of labor-pains come hand in hand with that process, but I love the feeling at the end, like you've created a masterpiece that you know everyone is going to love. If you're not challenged by what you're creating I definitely think it will not be as satisfying in the end, we definitely have a great appreciate for this record. Do you have an ultimate goal for your music? Any things that you know you want to accomplish with it? We want people to latch onto our music and to love it. We want My Favorite Highway to be the next big name in music and to continue to build a long lasting career. I think our music will be around for a while. Who are some of your major musical influences and what do you take from that inspiration that applies to your music? Maroon 5, John Mayer, Coldplay, U2, Third Eye Blind, Jimmy Eat World... to name a few. I wouldn't say we take away anything stylistically in particular from any of these artists, but they all write amazing songs and that's what we strive to do and they inspire us in that sense. For those of us who haven’t seen you live, could you please describe a show? If you like the CD you'll love the live show. We very much pride ourselves on our live show, the music is the same quality as what you hear on the CD, it's a very emotionally charged, energetic show. I'm always inspired after we play a show, so I hope that our shows are inspiring to others. You definitely have to come see it for yourself. What is your favorite song to play live, and which one gets the best reaction from the crowd? My personal favorite is "Getaway Car", that song means a lot to me and the bridge of that song is always the defining moment of every show to me. I think Getaway Car, Say So, and Bigger Than Love get the greatest reaction. What fuels your passion for what you do? When I take a step back and look at everything I think to my self... we were given these amazing talents and we were given an amazing platform to use them, and it's really a once in a lifetime opportunity and it's such a blessing. Everyone in this band has a desire to perform and create music and if you combine that desire with this opportunity you get a lot of passion. We all genuinely love doing what we do. What can we expect from you guys in the future? A re-release of the record this spring featuring new songs, lots of touring, and MFH on the radio. Shameless self-promotion time. Anything you think we should know about My Favorite Highway, anything you would like to say to your fans. Now is the time to do it! I think that every answer above is shameless and self-promoting, so if there's one thing you should know about My Favorite Highway it is that if you drive hammered you will get nailed. Here at The Sound Faction we are five of the most random girls you will ever meet. So we like to end our interviews on a less serious note by asking five random questions, just for some laughs. What female fashion trend absolutely confuses you? None of them confuse me, but several of them upset me, one being those shorts that Katy Perry wears that come up to your belly button... that can't be comfortable. If you could be any inanimate object, what would you be? A traffic light. If you were nail polish, what color would you be? Lime green. If you were a scented candle, what would you smell like? Vanilla, Pumpkin Spice, or Apple Cinnamon, all of which I own and smell delicious. Are you in fact too scene for the dance floor? No, I just sell that shirt so scene kids will buy it and I can make money off of them by exploiting their desire to be different. Thank you again to Dave from My Favorite Highway for taking the time to answer soe questions for us. Rock out to My Favorite highway! Their PureVolume is here, and their MySpace is here.
