BAND OF THE MONTH: METRIC
![]() So, May is the month of Metric. Not only because they have a fabulous new album out (Fantasies, go get it!), but also because it was in May when I first got introduced to the band in a meaningful way. Let me take you on a journey...*flashback to May 2004* After my last final of my Freshman year in college in Jersey, I hopped in my friend Eric's 1988 Honda Accord, and sped off to the NJ Transit station, to get to Newark Penn, to hop the PATH to Christopher Street to see Metric in the Village. While I knew some of the music before I saw Metric live, it this concert that cemented my love of the band. That experience was the quintessential NYC concert experience (complete with veggie burgers in a diner after on 10th and Broadway, and a frantic race back to NJ on the last train.) Metric is best described as a synth-techno pop band, with an amazing lead singer (she is a petite woman with a very powerful voice.) If you need a great roadtrip soundtrack, just pop in some Metric (especially Whole World Underground, their breakout CD), and be transported to a happy upbeat musical world. ![]() Oh Metric…I will never forget the first time I heard you. The year was 2005, I was in grade 12 and hating every second of high school. I was sitting at my computer as I was supposed to be doing my Ancient History homework, but like always I was procrastinating. Much Music was on the TV…You know, when it still played music (OH SNAP!) and I was enjoying the many bands that were making an appearance in my life for the first time. That is when ‘Monster Hospital’ came on. Honestly, I loved it from the beginning. It was unlike anything I had ever heard. I was hooked instantly and have been a fan of Metric ever since! I was very excited when I learnt that Doc picked Metric for May. They are a great band and totally deserve to be a band of the month!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I remember when I first heard Metric, I was definitely with Doc, and I believe we were either driving to Bar Harbor or the Desert of Maine for some super silly touristy fun (even though we've both lived here for ages and ages). Either way I distinctly remember it being a glorious day out, the windows were down, the radio was up and I was on a trip to anywhere with my best friend and life was super good! We switched the CD and Doc put in Metric and I was hooked on it! It was the perfect summer day, cruising down the highway with the windows down, laughing and grinning reminiscing with Doc about our years as friends together, listening to amazing music and enjoying our freedom for the day. So whenever I hear Metric I think about that day and I can't help but to grin. It's perfect summer driving music, crank it up, roll down the windows and do a little driver's seat wiggle-dance. LINKS
