Manda vs. Marianas Trench

If you guys didn't know already, I'm Canadian (just like the majority of the kids on this site,) which means that I get exposed to a large amount of awesome Canadian bands (I suppose I thank MuchMusic for this a little, mostly just going to shows and finding really good openers,). One of these bands, who I'd honestly have to say are probably my favourite Canadian band, is Vancouver's own Mariana's Trench!

If you've been following us at SF at all, you might remember me choosing them as August's Band of the Month, and a little while before that, I emailed the guys in the band to see if I could get an interview. A few weeks ago, I checked out MySpace and lo and behold, Ian got back to me, and helped me learn... well... about the bands obsession with cakes, really...

So, without further ado, Ian, from Marianas Trench!

"Serious tasty mouth watering goodness."
- Ian Casselman: Marianas Trench

So let's start off with the basics, introductions! What's your name and what do you do for the band?

Ian, and I play drums and the xylophone.

Tell us anything important you think we should know about Marianas Trench.

Our album should be coming out sometime this winter. We've been working hard on it non stop. We are all chocolate cake bakers in our spare time. You know all those McCain deep and delicious cakes out there. Yup, we made 'em.

What does each member bring that's special to everything that is Marianas Trench?

Mike is good at the icing. I'm the baker. Josh like to do the mixing. Matt is good at eating.

So our readers know what to look forward to, try and describe your live show in words.

Serious tasty mouth watering goodness. The real deal.

In your opinion, what's been your favourite moment as a band so far?

Touring the country and getting to know our fans. We always hang out with everyone after the shows and its been a blast.

You've toured Canada, now spill. Do you have favourite and least favourite venues?

Ontario is always great cause there are so many places to play. I honestly truly love playing everywhere. Canada rocks!

How do you think (if at all) your music has evolved since you first got together as a band?

We're just tighter and more developed. We've believe in the true craft of it all. If its sucks it gets dumped. No B sides.

Is there a certain process you guys go through when writing songs?

Similar to baking. Only goodness goes in.

Any quirky band rituals you're comfortable with sharing with SF readers?

Naked rain dance of course. Just a little fig leaf for those opportune areas.

We know that you're currently in the studio working on your second CD, so I have to ask... What can we expect in the future from Marianas Trench?

Double layer cakes. Everything is getting bigger and better.

As an added bonus question: Sound Faction's Semi-mom (who absolutely loves your band and ends up singing "Shake Tramp" ... well, a lot...) wants to know what your mommies wanted you to be when you grew up. ...Before you decided on 'Rockstar'.

Oh probably wanted us to grow up and be responsible and just good people. I think that's what every mom wants. Ain't nothing wrong with going to school though. I think its a smart thing to do.

The Sound Faction is make up of five girls who are random at best, love to laugh and make others laugh. We try to ask all of our interviewees five random questions at the end... so here goes.

If you could have any non-standard (re: flying, x-ray vision... comic book stuff) superpower, what would it be?

I would love to be able to fly.

What is your least favourite vegetable that isn't green?

Squash

If you were a flavour of Potato Crisp, what kind would you be?

Hot and spicy.

If you could be the champion of anything, what would it be? (If you say "the world" we all start laughing at you hysterically, just so you know.)

Ok. The Universe.

If you could be any old-school rock god for a day, how would you abuse the power?

Tom Jones. I would love to show off my hairy chest and wear those banana stuffed pants.

Thank you again to Ian for taking time out of his super busy schedule to answer our questions, and of course, if you want to check out Marianas Trench, you can find their MySpace here, their homepage here, and some pretty sweet merch stuff here (their album is there, you should buy it. Mhm).
