BAND OF THE MONTH: LUDO
![]() Well this month is my pick, and I've decided to go with Ludo, who hail from St Louis, MO. I've known of Ludo for a couple of years now. I don't remember how I stumbled upon "Love Me Dead", but it was my first exposure to them, and I would recommend you make it yours as well. Not that the band doesn't have a wide variety of songs that would all do well for a first listen, but it hooked me. Recently on a road trip with Jen and our friend Jess, she was on a Ludo kick and they (and another awesome band, Tommy and the High Pilots) were most of what we listened to the whole trip. I knew they had a sound I could really dig, bit having them massively exposed to me over the weekend really cemented in that this was a band I was going to love. My favourite aspect of Ludo is the stories they create in each song. They're very unique lyricists and each song is it's own encapsulated universe (The Horror of Our Love, Go-Getter Greg are good examples of this in my opinion, simply because of the polar opposite vibes the two songs give off). I find myself getting emotionally involved with the songs you can tell they want you to, and smiling and dancing to the light-hearted tunes in their repertoire. I know I sound like such a broken record every month, but for real, just go give them a listen. Make sure to check out The Horror of Our Love, The Broken Bride, Love Me Dead, Topeka, and Good Will Hunting By Myself to see the range of music they put out there. ![]() Wow! It's September already! It amazes me with how fast the summer has disappeared. Every September feels like its a new year all over again. And with a new month comes a new band for you all to check out. This month we have a band from St. Louis, Missouri by the name of LUDO. The first time I heard of Ludo was when I was taken to a show here in Toronto that they were headlining. Now I had never heard of the band or even any of their music at this point and I went into the show with an open mind and completely open ears. I have to admit that though Ludo wasn't really my thing, I found myself having a pretty damn good time at their live show. It was so much fun and the band members are completely hilarious. They kept me laughing and smiling the whole set they performed. Even though Ludo isn't completely my thing, I will admit that I am sure a lot of you out there would greatly enjoy them. In turn, I took a moment to go listen to some of their tunes and found that I have a feeling some of you will greatly enjoy "Save Our City", "Drunken Lament" and "Skeltons On Parade". So, take a chance and check them out, even if they also aren't you thing it is great exposure to some new music for you. ![]() Okay, confession time! When Manda announced that Ludo would be our band of the month for September, I cringed. I had never really listened to Ludo before, but I had heard some not super great things from friends about them, and I wasn't sure I'd dig it. That being said, it turns out that I was guilty on the charges of judging a band before actually giving them a chance! After mentally chastising myself for not having an open mind, I fired up Spotify and searched for Ludo. The very first song that Spotify pulled up for me was "Love Me Dead" from the album You're Awful, I Love You. I LOVE IT! I loved it so very much that I had to listen to it three times in a row before I could move on. Consider me a brand new Ludo fan! Every song I listened to (about 15 or so) I adored! There was a very strong Forgive Durden vibe to the songs I listened to (which I loved)! In fact, the more I listened to it, the more I had to check and make sure I hadn't slipped into a Forgive Durden playlist. My favorites by far was "The Horror of our Love", "Drunken Lament", "Save Our City", "I'll Never Be Lonely Again", and "Such As It Ends". Make sure you check out the links at the bottom, and if you're a Spotify user, we've set up a Spotify Playlist linked below of our favorite Ludo songs for you to listen to! ![]() As summer comes to an end, a new band must be picked to focus our attention on. This month's band is Ludo. Now, like most bands the other girls on the site choose, I had never heard of Ludo, so I fired up Spotify, and set myself up with all songs Ludo. I kinda cheated with my Spotify, and listened to the "Top List," figuring the best way to tell if you like a band is to listen to their most popular songs. As soon as I heard the first words of "Love Me Dead," I was hooked. The combination of the upbeat tune and the slowly angering lyrics had me for the entire song. And then I remembered that I heard that song before, somewhere. I loved it then, and I love it now. Caity's completely right, "The Horror of our Love" is made of win. That's the best way to describe it. Other songs made of win include "Lake Pontchartrain," "Cyborgs vs Robots," and "Skeletons on Parade." Though all songs have different styles, from the punkish "Lake Pontchartrain," to the showtune-esque/jazzy "Skeletons on Parade," they are all held together from some pretty creative, story telling lyrics. Basically, Ludo is full of aweome-sauce. I have a feeling that they will be in heavy rotation in my playlists from now on. ![]() ![]() ![]() I won't lie, my reaction to the news that Ludo was botm was quite similar to Caity's. But where Caity cringed because of things she had heard from other people regarding Ludos music, I cringed because I have heard Ludo...and in all honesty, I didn't want to listen to them again. Now, before I explain why I didn't want to listen to them again, let me first state that Ludo is not a terrible band. At all! They are talented, and have great songs with lyrics like you've never heard, but I just...didn't want to listen again! But Jen, why?! A few months back Manda, myself and one of our good friends embarked on a roadtrip and in all honesty, when you're lost in the Bronx with crazy Bronx drivers, Ludo is not what you want to take your mind off of the Bronx. But as I wasn't in a Ludo mood then, I decided to give them another listen. But my first impression stands firm, I do honestly like them. I very much enjoy "Love Me Dead," and "Scream Scream Scream," but they probably wouldn't be my first pick of something to listen to. I wouldn't turn them off, but I also wouldn't go looking for them. But as always, check them out for yourself! Just because Ludo isn't really my cup of tea, doesn't mean they aren't a great band. In all honesty they are a fantastic band. Definitely a good pick for September!! LINKS
