Natty vs. Lovers Make Liars
As I've said before, I don't usually take a lot of chances on new bands. I like to stick with what I know (I think this site has opened me up though to some amazing styles and new bands that I would never think of listening to). MY friend in Cali sent me a link to this band, after he had gotten a copy of a demo. I decided to check them out and actually really enjoyed what I was listening too. This band hailing from Los Angeles is for sure something to look out for. Keep them on your radar because honestly? I think these guys are going places. I was lucky to be able to have a few minutes of the bands time. To talk about the future, new albums, and who they wanna win a date with. Apparently, it was time for the Sound Faction Girls to do their math. "Most bands that seemingly come out of nowhere on the radio or TV have likely been a hard working band for years." First and foremost for our readers out there, ROLL CALL! Who are you all, and what do each of you do for the band? Well my name is Jordan, I play bass in the band. Vanand and Tordy both play guitar, and Sean plays the drums. As far as the writing process, everyone has a fairly specific role, but all of them are important. 2 months ago we parted ways with our vocalist Ron, and have since had a temporary vocalist for shows; most notably a spot we got on the last date of the Van's Warped Tour, that we really couldn't pass up. We're still searching for the right person for the job, working hard and staying positive. How long have you all known each other? How did you meet? Tordy, Vanand and myself all knew each other from back in freshman year in high school, but never really kept in touch much after that. The two of them met Sean through Sean's previous band and eventually hooked up to jam together. Sometime after that I came in and we all liked the idea of starting a serious band. What's the origin of your band name? We wanted something that people can relate to and it seems to work. You mention the name to someone and a typical response is "wow, that's so true" haha. It's fairly self-explanitory and to say there is a hint of cynicism in the name is hardly a stretch.. and we like that. It's fun. When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together? We all came together to be the group you know us as now before summer last year. We've all been in bands before and decided to start a new band together because we all liked the same kind of music and had the same goals in mind, and vibe really well off of each others ideas. When we're in the studio we're all business but we are all great friends also, a strong band is a lot like a family. What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences? Pop/Rock/Alternative... but i suppose you could just call it pop really. We're really into everything from newer alt-pop rock bands like The Cab, We The Kings, Boys Like Girls, Paramore, to more straight pop/R&B artists like Chris Brown, Usher, Jonas Brothers... you get the picture. Back in July, you announced that your current lead singer Ron was leaving the band, has that been one of the biggest challenge as a band? It's very difficult for an up and coming band to lose a member, and losing your vocalist is arguably one of the worst situations a band can be in. However, we don't believe that our previous singer "made our sound". We have a lot of faith in the songs that the core of the group make and that they will be just as good or better with somebody else singing them. We had some ongoing issues with Ron, nothing that needs to be talked about.. but we felt that parting with him was the best decision for the rest of us. What's your ultimate direction for the band? To be as general as possible for this question, we love playing music that we create together and we'd really like to do it for as long as possible and be successful in the process. As an unsigned band, is there a struggle to get your name and music out there? Definitely. These days there are so many good new bands coming out that it takes a lot more than it used to to get and stay ahead of the pack. Great and unique music, live performance, image, business sense, etc. are all equally vital to success. It doesn't hurt to know the right people as well haha. I understand that you are currently working on a new album, how is that coming along? We are currently spending the majority of our time working on follow-up material, but we're not in any rush to release anything. We're really happy with the new songs we've been writing and we hope to blow everyone away with them when the time is right. Can we except something different compared to the Undone EP you released back in February of this year? We don't want to say the cliche thing and say that the new material is "more mature", but the new songs are definitely some of the same but better. A little more pop maybe, and perhaps what we wanted the songs on the EP to sound like. Any there any plans to head out on tour to promote the album and your music? Not at this time. Our main focus is to find a new singer and write some great new songs, as well as build a bigger fan base around our area and over the internet. We'll be ready to head out on a tour when we're ready to release another album though. Absolutely. What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands? The most important thing when starting a serious band is that everybody clicks and that everyone is going to stick it out when things get tough. It's inevitable that they will at some point for some reason. Share common goals and don't let up. It takes a lot of time and hard work, there is virtually no such thing as overnight success. Most bands that seemingly come out of nowhere on the radio or TV have likely been a hard working band for years. The Sound Faction is make up of five girls (...and Ed) who are random at best, love to laugh and make others laugh. We try to ask all of our interviewees five random questions at the end. Who would you want to win a date with? Well, there's 5 of you Sound Faction girls and at the moment 4 of us. You do the math. : ] What is your biggest guilty pleasure? Ehh. Probably NSync or the Backstreet Boys. That kinda stuff. You can say you hate it all you want but everybody is a sucker for it. It's just too catchy. Leg warmers... Functional accessory or bad fad? Leg warmers were a fad? Where were we? Oh now i remember, we were somewhere being cool. If you could be the champion of anything, what would it be? (and if you say The World, I might have to die of laughter!) Well then you're not giving us a whole lot of choice, are you? The World. Duh. Maybe Call of Duty 4. Haha. If you could be any old school rock god for a day, how would you abuse the power? Probably become the champion of... well, just read the last question. Jordan's note: People can listen to our entire EP album "Undone" on our Myspace page, as well as purchase it from many online retailers such as iTunes and Amazon, etc. We will have some new merchandise up soon as well. We run everything ourselves and love talking to fans, so we're looking forward to hearing from people! Thanks again to Jordan for talking to us, and if you want to check out Lovers Make Liars, you can find their MySpace here, and their homepage here.
