Linsey vs. Flatlined
I found this band during my first ever Myspace crawl with the Sound Faction; and although I wasn't sure just what I was expecting, I found I really enjoyed the music to be found on their page. They turned out to be one of the most excitingly original bands that I found that day. And so, I give you Flatlined; A group of several talented musicians, who seem to be straight up nice guys. Enjoy! First of all, Let's start with a little self introduction for our readers who do not know who you are. Who are you and what do you do for the band? I am Jimi Battle of the band Flatlined, Guitarist Extraordinare! Now that that’s out of the way, How did Flatlined come to be the band that it is today? Flatlined started as an idea back at the end of 2002. Our first show was March 15th 2003, first record April 20 2004, and we have been touring Canada and the US ever since. What inspired the name, "Flatlined"? It's a truly lame story... so let's pretend that one of us got stuck in freezer and flatlined, then another of us saved the first ones life... Your lyrics often seem very meaningful and deep. What do you find inspires you as an artist? Animals. We love the zoo! In the past 6 years, Flatlined has released two separate albums. How, If at all, do you find they differ from each other? The first was written when we were young and believed we knew exactly what a song was. The second was written when we were a little more mature and realized what we were doing weren't real songs at all, just random riffs and ideas thrown together. Flatlined has also been touring Canada and America since 2005. Do you think there was a positive reaction to your music? If so, how? We have made great friends in every city we have played in. I hope that means they liked our music, because if not it means they just pity us. What has been your best venue experience so far? One venue in Vernon, BC must have though we were total rockstars. They gave us a rider (a bunch of crazy demands backstage), a hotel (we normally sleep in our van...) and a boatload of money, like 10 times what we normally got paid. That had to be the best venue for how they treated the band. As for audience, I believe you can have a great show anywhere. According to Flatline's Myspace, new material is currently being worked on. Anything you can tell us about that? Slowly but surely! It's a different writing process so far. We used to practice at one of our houses, and now we all live in apartments, so the 'at home practices' have gone out the window. Embrassingly, in this digital age we have recently been writing seperately and sending each other updates on the songs via email, with changes and additions. It's going well so far - but it might have a less organic feel, so who knows if the album will be more technical, or we scrap this material and write all new stuff when we finally figure out where we can practice. Out of all your time as a band, which touring memory is your favourite? Why? I gotta say, some of the terrible things that have happened make the best memories. Like the time we lost Brad, and as a last resort asked some cops if they might know anything at 5 in the morning. Low and behold we found Brad handcuffed in the backseat of that cruiser and even better luck was they were so sick of him they were desperate to give him back to us. Flatlined is from Niagara Peninsula, Ontario. How does the scene treat you there? It varies for us. we really don't spend much time at home, so sometimes people are super anxious to see us and come out in droves... then other times I think they forget who we are... in the end some of our best shows of all time have happened right in Niagara. Do you have any pre-show rituals you want to share with us? Usually we drink a lot... The Sound Faction is made up of six incredibly and awesomely random girls who absolutely love to laugh. We like to end our interviews on a fun note; via, five incredibly random questions. Think your up for it? Yup! If you could only eat one type of food for the next three years, which food would you choose and why? Thai. It's delicious and nutritious. Not many fat Thai's out there. If you were a scented candle, what would you smell like? Old man, cause no one would want to burn me and I could live forever. What was your favourite bath toy as a child? A submarine, at the time I think it was just a cool toy. Looking back it seems like it might have been penis related. If you were a Care Bear, what would the picture on your tummy be of? Poor alcohol, everyone would want my Care Bear countdown. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live and why? kingston ontario. love that town... Big thanks to Jimi from Flatlined for taking time out to chat with us about the band. If you're interested in hearing Flatline's sound, check out their MySpace page! Archive
