The Sound Faction vs. Hundredfold

Straight out of our own Winnipeg Manitoba come the wonderful guys in Hundredfold. I recently got to interview Rejean (see pronunciation in the interview) and ask them a bit about being a really successful entirely indie band, and just how they have fun. Enjoy!

First and foremost for our readers out there, ROLL CALL! Who are you all, and what do each of you do for the band?

Rejean
(Pronounced Ray- and then the French version of John...like Wyclef Jean!) I sing and play guitar.

Alex
Hmm...Alex is soon to be our lead guitar player... I'll explain in a few weeks!

Eric
... Is our bass player that has all the good boyish looks you can shake a stick at.

Jon
New drummer...moved to Winnipeg from California to be our drummer...dedicated? crazy? both?

What are some bands you look up to, either individually, or all together?

We are all over the board as far as who we as individuals look up to which I think is a good thing... as for me I have always looked up to bands that in my opinion are seemingly larger then life... growing up it was bands like GNR and Metallica now its bands like AFI and MCR and Blink and so on. This is the tip of the iceberg as far as influences but its a good start.

Do any of you guys have any funny little quirks that you're cool with sharing? Special little talents, stuff like that?

The list is way too long my friends! hmmm... I can pee in a bottle lying down on the bench in the tour van without spilling a drop. Is that gross? Maybe. Are you impressed? Yes.

What's the music scene like in Manitoba? Are you guys bigger in your local area than the rest of Canada do you think?

The scene is better then some places, and mosdef not as cold as some... I dunno, we kinda don't pay a lot of mind to the "scene" in Winnipeg.

And we definitely have a strong hometown fan base but we play here as much as we play most other spots in Canada. I think our popularity kinda goes in pockets all over the country... and states for that matter... I think this is due to the fact that we don't get a ton of specific national support like much or MTV or mainstream radio. Our fans know us from seeing us live or finding us online... and our fans are amazing... None like them.

Now, your first CD, "Via Sirens" has a pretty amazing sound to it. Can we expect more of the same for the next one? Or have you been experimenting with some new sounds?

Well we are a different band on so many levels since sirens... when you hear the new record you will know it's HF but you will be like "what?"... in a good way though!

How has it been recording the new stuff? Any fun stories?

Well we are doing this one in our own studio... we have that luxury and it makes the writing recording process a lot cooler in my opinion... we set our own goals and deadlines, and we don't have to wait for the engineer to show up 4 hours late!

I guess the most interesting thing about our studio is that its in a pretty rough neighborhood in Winnipeg so loading in gear gets a little sketchy late at night! You are always looking over you shoulder. Last summer a dude got shot 3 times right in front of the building and bled out on the doorstep... And I couldn't make that up!

Do you guys have any touring planned for the future?

Yes yes yes. We have always been a band thats been all about the road. We have spent months at a time on the road thus far and have no plans of letting up. In support of this album, I can't even begin to speculate how many shows we will play.

So we have to know: who does your cool-looking t-shirts? Because the design of them is really great!

Well we obviously have the opportunity to farm it out to someone with more time then us, but we love doing our own stuff... all our shirts and hoodies and stickers and posters and designed by us. I'll do it that way until its impossible.

The Sound Faction is make up of five girls who are random at best, love to laugh and make others laugh. We try to ask all of our interviewees five random questions at the end. Here goes.

What's your favourite 5-letter word?

Jesus!

If you could have any non-standard superpower (flying, x-ray vision, etc?comic book stuff), what would yours be?

I would have the ability to grow a sushi tree. Rainbow roll here we come!

What's your favourite song on Guitar Hero?

Prayer for the Refugee.

If you were a flavour of potato crisp, what one would you be?

Ketchup!

If you could be any old school rock god for a day, how would you abuse the power?

I would be Mick Jagger and I would strut.

Thanks again to Hundredfold for talking with us! Be sure to check out the band's MySpace, and let us, and them, know what you think!
