BAND OF THE MONTH: FIRST AID KIT
![]() This month is November, also known as 'Movember' in hopes of bringing awareness about prostate cancer, so you'd think that I would pick a band of big burly bearded men, right? Well you're wrong. It honestly never even crossed my mind. But, the band we do bring forth this month is still awesome and I'm sure if they could, they would grow big burly beards for Movember, but they can't because they are women. Two women with an unbelievable amount of talent, and who most definitely deserve to be singled out. In 2007, Swedish sisters Johanna, and Klara Söderberg, also know as First Aid Kit, sent a demo to a local radio station of a song called 'Tangerine.' soon after, the sisters, then 17 (Johanna), and 14 (Klara), signed to Rabid Records and released their debut EP, "Drunken Trees," in 2008. A year later, Wichita Records reissued the EP with three additional live songs, and a cover other Fleet Foxes, 'Tiger Mountain Peasant Song.' In 2010 First Aid Kit released their debut full length titled, "The Big Black and the Blue," and completed around 100 shows in a tour of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Europe. Their next album will be released sometime in the new year is said to be produced by Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes. "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song" is what lead me tp First Aid Kit. I found the cover beautiful and was struck with how talented they were, being such a young age. I did some looking and came across their own composition, "Ghost Town." First Aid Kit is a wonderful dose of folk that people don't see much of these days. Talented musicians, and lryicists, First Aid Kit is a welcome change to todays music industry My personal favorites include, "Ghost Town," "Hard Believer," "In The Morning," "Josephin," and Pft course, their cover of "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song." "and it's one life, and it's this life, and it's beautiful." ![]() It was several months ago now that Jen and I were chatting, and she happened to mention First Aid Kit to me. I thoguht I had heard of them, and checked my iPod (which is just chalk full of mystery songs that just appear there without my knowledge of their existance, and work their way into my shuffle mix until they've become permanantly engrained in my subconscious...) and found that I did indeed have a song from First Aid Kit on my iPod, and in fact I had listened to it nearly 50 times without actually realizing what it was. The song was "Ghost Town" and it is a hauntingly gorgeous tune that I highly recommend to any with ears and the ability to hear things. Shortly after that, on Jen's recommendation, I purchased the record "The Big Black & The Blue" which was been on permanant rotation ever since! I am madly in love with First Aid Kit, especially the songs "In The Morning", "Waltz For Richard" and my absolute favorite, "I Met Up With A King". The sound of First Aid Kit is folksy and mellow, along the lines of a female Bright Eyes or Family of the Year, and if you like the folk-y sound, or just plain want to hear some wonderful music, make sure to check out the links below to give them a listen. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Welcome to November! Our band for this month is First Aid Kit. Now, I hadn't heard of this band until Jen picked them, and that means I've only known of their awesomeness for a few days. But that's what they are, awesome. A perfect band to listen to before the holidays really become hectic. The best way to describe First Aid Kit is a more folksy, female vocalist version of Mumford and Sons. It's really refreshing to hear a lead female vocalist and an acoustic guitar together again, where the lyrics are the focus rather than the really awesome technology that is needed to produce a lot of music today (autotune, I'm looking at you). It's a simple style that I haven't really heard that since I stole my mom's Woodstock soundtrack on vinyl. While I like everything I hear, my favorite songs are "Ghost Town," "When I Grow Up," "Hard Believer," and "Winter is All Over You." So, if you need to find a bit of quiet time before you enter the holiday rush, or just want to hear some music similar to Mumford and Sons, I totally recommend First Aid Kit. They are just awesome. Also, they are currently touring, so check out their dates. I think they would put on a really great show. LINKS
