Caity vs. The Centennials
On a MySpace crawl a while ago, I happened across a band from Vancouver, British Columbia that I just fell in love with! They were The Centennials, and upon hearing their Indie/Folk/Experimental sound in the song "Little Darling" I was instantly in love with them. So you know how I do, I had to get ahold of them and ask them a few questions to bring you dear readers something new and fresh! So sit back, relax and enjoy! We like to start off all of our interviews with your basic introductions, could you tell us who you are, and what you do? I'm Sam Merritt, who with the help of Parker assembled the band back in grade eight. I write a majority of the lyrics, play rhythm guitar and sing lead vocals. If needed I will play the tambourine, djembe and maybe some shakers.
We have Parker Woods who plays lead guitar and back up vocals, he helps write many songs and composes most of the tunes and melodies on guitar and other various instruments.
Then last but not least, we have Taylor Reynolds (who has just recently joined the band) who provides lyrics, various instruments including the mandolin, guitar and his main talent the harmonica and he also is a singer but has yet to lay some tracks down. When I first heard of The Centennials, I went to the MySpace page, and the first thing I heard was your song "Little Darling" and I immediately assumed that you were mid 20's to 30's solely on the experimental/indie style of music you were playing. I was shocked to learn that you were in fact all fifteen years old. It is extremely rare that we find such a young band with such astounding talent playing in a genre not categorized with a hyphenated "-core". Have you found your age to be helpful or a hinderance in regards to the scene where you are? Our general age is seen as a hinderance however, it has never stopped us from accomplishing our goals as musicians. We are all fairly mature for our ages but we aren't trying to be anything we're not. We're just three guys trying to promote our music and hopefully influence others. Tell us how The Centennials formed and what fuels your passion behind what you do? Well Parker and I had been jamming for the past 2 years and always wanted to make something out of it. The topics that keep us writing for the most part are girls, close friends, late night experiences and, busking through the quiet streets of Tsawwassen in South Delta. However our main inspiration is the emotion that our music brings to people while we play. What does each member of The Centennials bring that is speical to the band? What does each of you contribute to the band dynamic? Parker always seems to have different ideas for the songs in general, varying from a simple keyboard melody to whatever personal lyrics he has to offer. Taylor is extremely personable and is never afraid to take a stage no matter where it may be. He also always has fantastic lyrics to offer and has a very distinct singing style. I come up with most of the song topics and like to bring in as many new, local influences as possible. Not to mention my red hair. All of us bring equal contributions to what we call, The Centennials. There's always going to be someone who isn't a fan, so what, if anything, do you take from criticism? All the feedback we get is taken in but there is no willingness to change our sound or style just to earn more brownie points with another group of people. We are always open to suggestions depending on how you address them. All opinions are heard and respected, unless you're a heckler. We don't take kindly to hecklers... What can fans of your music expect to hear from you guys in the future, and how do you think your music will be evolving? We have no clue what the future has in store. Anticipating our upcoming journeys is an impossible task. What has been your best moment as a band so far? The last three weeks we have been having such an amazing rush of popularity with our music. Entering in the CBC On the Coast competition was great for getting us radio play and more listeners. Also making it into our school Extravaganza (A Talent Show in front of over 1000 people) is getting us pumped and practicing like never before. What do you do to pump yourselves up for a show? Any pre or post show rituals? We relax and go over the songs we're going to perform and just go out and let any emotions were feeling out in our music.
Do you have an ultimate goal for your music? Anything that you know you want to accomplish with it? We basically just want to play our music and see how far we can get with it. Music has been a huge part of all of our lives and we want to make it a huge part to everyone else through our music. The staff of The Sound Faction is comprised of six incredibly random girls whose primary goal is to just have fun. We like to end our interviews with five totally random questions to end on a light note, do you think you can handle it? Oh Definitely! Who would you want to win a date with? Sam: Scarlett Johannsson Taylor: Kristen Stewart Parker: Hannah Georgas If you could be the champion of anything, what would it be and why? Sam: Double Neck Air Guitar Taylor: Champion of catching people who state or write grammatical errors Parker: Badminton What girly movie do you secretly love? Sam: The Notebook Taylor: Twilight Parker: P.S. I love you What fashion trend (male or female) confuses you, and why? Anything but skinny jeans.. What is your favourite and least favourite dance craze? Favourite: Hand Jive Least Favourite: The Q-Tip And here is your shameless self-promo spot: if there is anything we didn't cover that you'd like to, or anything you want to say, here's where you do it!
