The Campbell Apartment - Insomniac's Almanac

To try and classify a record into a specific genre is a hard task. We don't want to typecast or pigeon-hole anyone around here... and often times there are four or five genres that we could use to explain the sound of a certain band or record. But without a joke, I can't even pick one that The Campbell Apartment would encompass. I suppose if you widened the parameters a bit, Alternative would cover it... so we'll go with that until I can come up with something more appropriate.

The Campbell Apartment's record "Insomniac's Almanac" is all over the map. After listening to the first song I wasn't sure where I stood on it. It put me in a strange limbo between listen further and turn it off. But my job is to listen further, so I press on. It has moments that I really love it, and it has moments that leave me scratching my head and wondering what sound did I just hear, or identify-that-woodwind.

Track number four, "St. Louis" is one that I like quite a bit, it's got a catchy melody that I find myself humming along with. The album's title track (number six) "Insomniac Almanac" is my favourite song, a simple melody with abstract lyrics that really gives an appropriate soundtrack to anyone who has ever suffered through insomnia.

The further I listen into the album, I find myself falling in love with the band's charming lyrics and melodies. It takes a little getting used to the interesting sound that they have, but it's original, and fresh, and by track number 8, "I'm Addicted To MySpace" I find myself dancing along with a smile on my face, anticipating the next song, and what subtle little joys it'll bring about.

Anyone who enjoys listening and experimenting with new music and new sounds, I would highly recommend picking up a copy of The Campbell Apartment's record "Insomniac's Almanac" and really let yourself open up to this interesting mix of sounds and lyrics.
