BAND OF THE MONTH: BURN HALO

Who misses their rock music? I know for a fact I do. Rock music isn’t the same as when I was younger. It was solid and refined and made you just go all out. Rock has sort of fallen under the radar lately, but not anymore. With this band of the month for June, we have a band that is bringing back the rock to music. I would like to give you a chance to hear about Burn Halo!

Sometimes this music drops into your lap and you can’t help but wonder where you were without it. I found out of Burn Halo through the former Eighteen Visions. When Eighteen Visions no longer decided to continue on, lead vocals James Hart decided to branch out and do his own music. Which in a sense made me extremely happy to say the least, due to the fact his voice is amazing. Cheesy? Yes I know, sometimes you just have to break it down simple to get your point across. Burn Halo has been a staple on my listening radar since I heard their first song on Myspace, when James decided to pursue this as a solo career first.

The band is made up of James on vocals, Joey Roxx on lead guitar, Timmy Russell on drums, Allen Wheeler on rhythm guitar and vocals and rounding out the list is Aaron Baylor on bass guitar and vocals. This band as a unit is completely solid and well formed. In the words of James when it came to the music he wanted to create: “I knew that I wanted a clear-cut rock ‘n’ roll band, which is something I had not had in the past,” Hart says of the music. “My vision and my brand of rock ‘n’ roll without having to compromise on any of the songs or any of the material. I wanted to make a very straightforward rock album. Something that had commercial appeal, but also something that had a classic, vintage mid-‘80s throwback vibe to it.” [Credit: Burn Halo Myspace]

This is the type of music if you want to drive down the highway with your windows (heck even your top down) and blast it would have everyone in the surrounding cars bouncing their heads and wondering where they can get the amazing rock music you are listening to. I had a chance back in December to see them live on stage and was completely in love with their performance and the stage presence that they have. I do believe that this band has the chance to make it for the long term in this very (and most times) fickle music industry.

Give them a chance, go pick up their debut album that came out recently! If you want to listen to them first head on over to their MySpace link below and get into the rock and roll music!

If you can't figure it out by now, I'm the member of SF who listens to the "softer" stuff (Guster, Metric, etc.) Since that is the case, when I got Burn Halo as the BoTM for June, I had no idea where to start with them. After listening to their stuff on Myspace, I realized that although they are not my cup of tea, I can totally see why Natty picked them.

Burn Halo has a sound that reminds me of old school Metallica (before Lars went on that crusade against Napster and "illegal" downloading.) Very guitar driven rock. But, trade in Metallica's more screaming vocals with something more melodic, like HIM's Ville Valo. Then you get Burn Halo. The guitars and bass hit you hard, but the lead singer, James Hart, has a great singing voice. So much so that he even harmonizes with the other members of the band. It's an unusual combination in metal-esque music, but one that makes Burn Halo a step above other metal bands.

So, if you dig the harder side of music, you'll love Burn Halo. Even if you don't regularly listen to metal and all its derivatives, check 'em out. You might find yourself driving down I-95 at 90 mph (120 km/hr), listening to Burn Halo, and not even realizing you're criminally speeding. OK, maybe that's just me. But still check out Burn Halo. The SF girls have yet to steer your wrong.

Hellooooo Burn Halo!

So I have to admit, I've heard Natty talk about Burn Halo like... a lot, but I've never actually listened to them until right now. Like, RIGHT now. I'm writing this as I'm listening to Dirty Little Girl on their MySpace. I have to say, I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far!

They have a good sound, gritty, but not dirty. It's well produced, and the song produces some definite head nodding- which would turn into full out head-banging if I was in the proper venue (See: actually at a concert of theirs).

I have to say I agree with what both Doc and Caity have said about them: What is UP pre-sucky Metallica? They have the same kind of vibe and I like it!

You should definitely go check this band out if you haven't had the chance to already! Natty, I'm sorry it took me this long to actually give them a listen!

To echo Doctah J's sentiments: what's up pre-sucky Metallica? The moment I clicked on the MySpace I felt like a young'n again sneaking my brother's Metallica records out of his room and rocking out on the bus on the way to school.

Burn Halo's sound is familiar and yet progressive all at once, I absolutely love it! Perfect anthemic guitar-driven rock. I want to jump around my room right now and get all stoked, swing my hair around and pump rock hands with shoulder-dislocating ferocity! Natty has done well picking Burn Halo this month, and I highly recommend dropping right by the band's MySpace and injecting your day with some "Dirty Little Girl"

I honestly feel really friggin stupid or lazy because I have known Natty for two years and I have heard her talk about Burn Halo for such a long time and I never got off my butt and actually listened to them until now either. WOW. Why did I wait?! I definitely agree with the other girls about pre-sucky Metallica. And I definitely love what I’m hearing.

Not going to lie, I am currently rocking out to Save Me as I do laundry and I am having so much fun! I could see myself rather enjoying a show…Natty, I’m in next time. For sure!!

I absolutely recommend checking out Burn Halo. If they’re not your style, pass them along. If they are, rock out with us!

Myspace song pick : Anjeo.
