The Boogieman Jordon Daniel - Blues Pops & Jazz Smokes
When I got this album to review, I have to admit I was stoked! I love me some jazz and blues, and it just so happens that I was in the perfect frame of mind to listen to it.
The 13 track record kicks off with "Our Song", a stripped down soulful song that features an acoustic guitar and a perfectly gritty voice singing a gorgeous melody. It moves right into track two (No Axe To Grind) with a distorted electric guitar and a more upbeat rock sound while still keeping that awesome blues feeling. The following tracks don't dissapoint, track 3 (I Want It All) provides a great song to sing along with, track 5 (Easy On The Eyes) is a great tune, but then all hell breaks loose midway through the record (in the best possible way) during track 6 (Agnostic John) in a dirty blues song that'll make you grit your teeth and and rock right out.
The album keeps up it's steam through track 7 (The Right Direction) right up to track 10 (Eyes of the People) which brings the volume down, but keeps the energy high and keeps your toes tapping. The record rocks out and wraps up on track 13 (Blues Pops & Jazz Smokes) a heavy driving song that ends the record on a fantastic note, and leaves you craving more!
I'm known on this website to be a stickler and super picky about every record I review, but I whole-heartedly enjoyed every moment of this record, I only wish there was more of it to enjoy! If you're in a modern blues band, take notes! This is modern blues the way it should be done. The guitar solos are crisp and clear and beautifully done, the background instrumentation is gritty, and the vocals are a perfect match for everything going on.
The album in its entirety is reminiscent of early Jeremiah Freed and a gritty sounding Allman Brothers Band. In industry terms, I think it's called "frickin awesome".
