BAND OF THE MONTH: BLACK LIGHT OPERA
![]() I am hoping that you all had a safe and enjoyable Halloween and are enjoying what great possibilities that the month of November will bring us. Well to start off our month here on the website I bring you a band from right here in Ontario, a band that I stumbled across randomly one day and fell in love with the minute I listened to that first track off the album Letters. Not only did the music pull me in and make me want more. Which band may I be referring to you may ask? Well that band is Oshawa's Black Light Opera. The band consists of Nick Glover (vox/guitar),Sean Sullivan (drums) and Colin Patchett (bass). They have a sound that is uniquely their own and with lyrics that are fantastic and have a storybook feel to them. The band has a very organic sound that works for them completely. The music is catchy and has a beat that flows perfectly with it. This is a band that if you heard them practicing in the garage up the street from you, I am sure you would find a group of people standing around jamming to the sound of the music flowing out. Black Light Opera is one of the few finds that I have come across that has become a staple on my ipod playlist, especially with songs such as Music Box and the bonus track off Letters Can't Say No. Even though it was hard for me to even pick one favorite because all the songs off their released album (the only one to date) are all amazing. I think that you all should go take a listen to this band off their myspace and let us know what you think about them. There hasn't really been any activity with the band in a while, but you never know what might pop up in the near future. I am hoping to be able to catch a live set from this band, because I am sure it would be amazing and epic all in one sentence and would leave me more in love with the music then I am right now. To all our readers, go out and pick up a copy of Letters. Please? I promise you won't regret it in the least, and I am sure the band will appreciate your support for them. ![]() ![]() ![]() Just like Caity, I had not heard of Black Light Opera before Natty declared them to be this month's band. As I'm listening to their myspace offerings, I hear things I most definitely like. Their garage-band quality definitely peaks my interest, and the lyrics are great. I'm especially digging "Can't Say No," and "Go Away." I definitely recommend checking out Black Light Opera, especially if you can catch them live. I'm sure they'd put on a great show. ![]() I'm joining the ranks of "Never heard them before", and as per usual, I'm writing this as I listen to them for the first time. The very first thing I notice is the less then clean sound of the music, which can be really hit or miss with me. In this case, it definitely works, at least with the first song that's playing, and that would be "Can't Say No". They have a catchy sound that, at least in this first track I'm hearing, is reminding me of the Pink Spiders for some reason. They don't necessarily sound the same, there's just something about it that strikes me as similar, and I like it. Next song on the docket is "The Letter". It's really sweet and is pulling at my heartstrings a bit, so that is a really, really good sign. I know I need to go on and listen to some of the other songs, but I kind of want to stay here and listen to this one... Okay. On to "World Famous Beat". I'll be honest and say I'm not too fond of this one. If I had stumbled across this one first, I may not like them as much as I do, so I'd say listen to one of the other two I've already mentioned before moving onto this one. "Go Away" is really cute and makes me want to bop around. The vocals kind of peak a bit and hit a nerve on occasions, but I can ignore that for the parts of the song that I enjoy. The lyrics in this song are probably my favourite of the songs that I've heard from Black Light Opera. A quick review, I know, but out of the four songs I listened to, I really enjoyed three of them. For a band I've never heard before, that's pretty damn good. I'd definitely say check them out. But don't start with "World Famous Beat."... ![]() ![]() ![]() This is the first that I've heard of Black Light Opera, and I have to admit, that I'm sitting at Tim Hortons with my headphones in, but one of my earbuds is busted, so I'm hearing Black Light Opera in my right ear, and the soothing tones of Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'" in the left as I'm trying to write this, it makes for a very odd mashup. However, focusing on Black Light Opera... I love it! This is what I like from my rock music, a driving beat, catchy and melodic lyrics, and a ton of fun! The first song I clicked was "Can't Say No", which was a great way to start it off! The other songs on their MySpace page (linked below) are great too, it reminds me of going to a local show in some tiny venue to see your best friend's band, and seeing the opening act rock the house! They have a great DIY vibe to them, which gives old fogies like me a sense of nostalgia. I highly recommend checking them out and forming your own opinion on them! LINKS
