Jen & Manda vs. A Static Lullaby

Back in 2006 my friend went away to college, and she met some friends who have some great music. And through them I heard about this band called A Static Lullaby. I borrowed their self-titled 2006 album from a friend and instantly found a band that I loved. They just recently released their newest album ‘Rattlesnake!’ and it was simply amazing! Big thanks to Dan for taking time out of his day to answer some questions for us!
- Jen

One day while I was sitting in the hallway of my highschool against my locker, eating my lunch on my own, a boy I had never met before sat next to me and asked me if I listened to The Used. I said yes, and that sparked an entire conversation. He lent me a copy of a CD called "...And Don't Forget To Breathe" by a band whose name he couldn't remember. Well, I listened to that CD and absolutely fell in love, and I found out for the both of us that the band was called A Static Lullaby. We didn't really talk much after that, but at least I got a damn good band out of the deal.

“Not a damn thing, I do this for myself...and my boys.”
Dan Arnold: A Static Lullaby.

For our readers who don't know who you are, could you please introduce yourself and what you do for the band?

My Name is Dan Arnold and I play guitar and sing for ASL.

How did A Static Lullaby come about and where did the name come from?

Basically when Joe and I were about 19 we put the band together using members of other local bands from our hometown. Our friend thought of the name at dinner and we liked it.

Your new CD came out last month, how do you feel about it in comparison to your other CDs? How do you feel about it in general?

I feel that this is Our Heaviest/Most fun record to date, all of our records offer something slightly different, we like to experiment.

How about the fans? How have they reacted to it so far (That you know of, at least), or is it still too soon to tell?

Fans that come out to the shows say that its our best record to date, and the new songs seem to be winning a lot of kids over live.

You guys are heading out on tour again, what is your favorite part about touring?

Playing, everything else is just a waste of time.

For anyone who hasn't been to see A Static Lullaby live, what can they expect from a live show?

100% energy, 100% fun, so don’t be afraid to dance.

What fuels your passion for what you do?

I just enjoy putting songs together and watching them play out exactly how you wanted it to, it’s the most rewarding thing in the world.

What is your favorite thing about your fans?

Loyalty, we’ve had some truly loyal fans over the seven years we’ve been together and they still make it out. They become good friends.

What has been your biggest challenge as a band? And what has been your best moment so far?

The biggest challenge for us is getting our music heard by the masses, were not really a radio friendly band so its hard to push it on people, they have to want to find it. There have been way too many ups and down to answer that.

How has your music evolved since you started?

It just really evolves with what type of music we're listening to at the time, we do all live in a van together, so we usually geek out on the same records.

There will always be someone who isn't particularly a fan. What, if anything, do you take away from criticism?

Not a damn thing, I do this for myself...and my boys.

If you were in charge of the music industry, what would be the first thing you would do?

Destroy MySpace. It’s flooding the market with shitty music and leaving the great bands, who don’t have some kind of hip image or whatever, out to dry.

The Sound Faction is made up of six very, very random people. So at the end of our interviews we like to end it on a lighter, less serious note, so we ask five of the most random questions ever asked in an interview. Just for some laughs.

If you were offered cookies, would you go to the darkside? And if not cookies, what WOULD it take to get you to the dark side?!

I’d do anything for an Oreo.

What's your favorite dinosaur?

If you could have any nonstandard superpower, what would it be and why?

I'd want to be able turn into Megan Fox's thong, for obvious reasons.

What was your favorite bath toy as a kid?

My penis most likely.

What is your favorite song to play on Guitar Hero or Rock Band?

Texas flood.

Thanks again to Dan For taking the time to talk to us, and if you want to check out A Static Lullaby, you can find their MySpace here.
