Album Review: Amnesia Amnesia - The Eating Disease

When I got the message that we were being asked to review Amnesia Amnesia's newest EP "The Eating Disease" the first thing that happened was hesitation and flashbacks to the first review of Amnesia Amnesia that I did with their EP "Versus the Bear". But I steadied myself and reminded myself that if I never gave bands second chances, that I wouldn't have come to like many of the bands I do now, so I cleared my mind and set about listening to "The Eating Disease" with a brand new perspective. There was a change to the lineup it seems, perhaps the band had changed their sound, or tightened up their style! (They didn't).

I hate to be the person that is down on a band that is clearly working hard, but I am coming from a consumer standpoint here: I would never pay money for a record of a band, when I could get the same effect by sticking the hose of the vaccuum in my ear canal. Bellowing for the sake of bellowing doesn't make your band hardcore, it makes it annoying, and in this entire record there is not one moment of reprieve for the beaten and worn out ear-drums of the listener until the end when it's over.

Now listen: just because I can't stand listening to this record for more than 5 minutes at a time, doesn't mean that somebody out there doesn't love it! So if you'll indulge me, readers, I would like to adress the members of Amnesia Amnesia directly here:

Jason, Jordan, Ty, Shayne, Graham:

I appreciate your hard work and the efforts that you've made in this EP and the previous that I reviewed as well. I am positive that there are a lot of folks that get their thrash on at your shows, and stream your MySpace songs every single day! That person is not me. I know that I sound harsh with some of the things that I say, understand that I have nothing against you as people, or against your band, it's solely my thoughts on the music as presented to me that I give my opinions on in these reviews.

Here is what I think your band is doing very well: not giving up! You may have missed a deadline or two, had a lineup change, gotten yourselves some H1N1, and that profile picture on MySpace makes you seem more "tortured cliche" than edgy, but you're not giving up, and that's what will stand the test of time. I commend you on your efforts for this record, I can't imagine how many lozenges you must have gone through, new vocalist, but your passion and commitment are not lost on me!

I wish I could give you a better review, I really do! I wish that I could have listened to the record and loved it, retracted my previous review's statement about the bellowing, and said something along the lines of "Amnesia Amnesia is absolutely the biggest comeback band since Hanoi Rocks started drinking again!" but I can't. Not this time.

So keep your heads up, kids, keep doing what you're doing, because although I'm fairly positive that the world centers around me, I am not the be all and end all of journalists.
